Panama City rewards a slower pace than most visitors expect. Once you leave the taxis and buses behind and pedal along the bay, the colonial streets of Casco Viejo open up, the skyline glitters across the water, and the Panama Canal itself comes into view. This is a city where renting a bike in Panama City lets you piece together landmarks that feel disconnected on a map but sit just a pleasant ride apart.
What makes this route work so well is the coastal spine running from Casco Viejo along the Cinta Costera to the Amador Causeway: mostly flat, largely on dedicated bike paths, and lined with some of the best views in the city. Away from this corridor, Panama City's heat, humidity and traffic aren't especially bike-friendly, so a bike rental in Panama City is best used for this scenic waterfront run rather than as everyday transport across town.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle, and there is no minimum age set by law. Rental shops will usually ask for a deposit, often held on a credit card or secured with your passport, and the amount varies by shop and by the bike you choose. Since no licence is needed, an international driving permit is irrelevant here.
A standard city or beach cruiser runs from 3 to 8 PAB per day in low season, and 8 to 15 PAB per day in high season. If you want a road, mountain or electric bike, expect 15 to 30 PAB per day. PAB and USD are used interchangeably in Panama, so you can think of these figures in dollars too.
High season runs from mid-December to mid-April, Panama's dry season, with extra crowds around Carnival and Semana Santa — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from May to November, heaviest around September to November, when prices drop and availability is easier to come by. January to March is generally considered the best window for riding, combining dry weather with manageable crowds.
Panama drives on the right. Cyclists are legally required to wear a helmet and to use lights or reflective gear after dark, so don't skip either even for a short ride. Posted speed limits in the city run roughly 40–60 km/h, a useful reference for judging how fast traffic moves around you. Panama enforces drink-driving rules strictly with a low blood-alcohol threshold, so if you've been drinking, leave the bike and take a taxi instead.
