Panama City rewards anyone willing to skip the taxi line. Pick up a motorcycle and you can weave from the balconies of Casco Viejo to the breezy waterfront of the Amador Causeway in the time it takes a car to clear one downtown block. Ride out to Miraflores Locks to watch a container ship squeeze through the Panama Canal, then climb Cerro Ancón for a skyline view most visitors never bother to chase.
The old quarter's one-way streets, the modern city's rush-hour gridlock, and the sprawl between sights all favour two wheels over four. A motorcycle threads through traffic that stalls cars for twenty minutes, and parking is a non-issue when every plaza has room for a bike. It also puts the longer run out to Gamboa and Soberanía National Park within easy reach, a rainforest-and-canal loop that's a slog by taxi and impossible on foot.
You'll need a driving licence valid for motorcycles — a car-only licence won't do. As a tourist, your valid foreign licence works for your authorised stay, up to 90 days, so an International Driving Permit isn't required. Most rental shops set a minimum age of 18, though some raise it for larger bikes. Expect a deposit, usually a credit-card hold plus your passport or licence details, with the amount varying by shop and machine.
A small 125–150cc scooter runs roughly 25-35 PAB per day in low season and 45-70 PAB per day in high season. If you'd rather tackle the Gamboa road on something bigger, a premium adventure-touring bike like a BMW GS costs around 90-150 PAB per day.
High season runs mid-December to mid-April, with extra spikes around Carnival and Semana Santa — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches May through November, when rates drop and bikes are easier to find on short notice. January to March is generally the best window: dry roads, good visibility and reliable weather for the ride out to Gamboa.
Panama drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger — rental helmets are basic, so bring your own if you have one. Speed limits run about 40-60 km/h in town and up to 80 km/h on rural highways. Drink-driving enforcement is strict, with roadside checkpoints, so treat it as zero-tolerance. Watch for unmarked speed bumps and aggressive bus traffic downtown, and avoid riding after dark outside the city, where lighting is minimal.
