Panama City rewards anyone willing to get off the sidewalk. Weave a scooter along the bay-front promenade of the Cinta Costera with the skyline rising on one side, then duck into Casco Viejo, where cobblestone lanes and rooftop bars sit inside a UNESCO-listed old town too tight and too charming for a car. Ten minutes later you can be watching container ships thread the Miraflores Locks or catching sunset over the bay from the Amador Causeway — three completely different moods, one afternoon, one tank of gas.

This is a city built for two wheels. The distances between its landmarks are short, but the traffic in between is dense and the heat is relentless on foot, so a scooter splits the difference: quicker than the bus, easier to park than a rental car, and nimble enough for the old town's narrow grid. It also opens up the stops a taxi driver won't bother with — the switchback climb up Ancon Hill, a rainforest trail minutes from downtown, even a day trip into the hills above the city.

Top 10 things to see in Panama City by scooter

  1. Casco Viejo — the UNESCO-listed old town, all cobblestones, plazas and rooftop bars, and easy to park a scooter right at its edge.
  2. Cinta Costera — the coastal boulevard skirting the bay, flat and scenic with skyline views the whole way.
  3. Calzada de Amador (Amador Causeway) — a causeway strung across three islands, best ridden at sunset for the canal-entrance views and waterfront cafes.
  4. Miraflores Locks — watch the Panama Canal at work from one of its most famous viewing points, a short ride from downtown.
  5. Cerro Ancón (Ancon Hill) — a short, winding climb rewarded with a summit lookout over the city, the canal and the surrounding rainforest.
  6. Parque Natural Metropolitano — genuine urban rainforest with trails and a scenic overlook, just minutes from the city center.
  7. Panamá Viejo — the ruins of the original 16th-century city, along a flat coastal route from Casco Viejo.
  8. Biomuseo — Frank Gehry's biodiversity museum at the causeway's entrance, an easy stop to fold into an Amador ride.
  9. Costa del Este waterfront — a modern seaside district with a boardwalk, good for a relaxed coastal cruise.
  10. Cerro Azul — a mountain village above the city with cooler air and winding roads, worth the trip for a longer day out of downtown.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Panama City?

You'll need a driving licence valid for motorcycles — a car-only licence won't be accepted. A foreign licence is fine for your authorised stay, up to 90 days, and no International Driving Permit is required. Riders are generally expected to be 18 or older, and shops usually take a deposit, typically a hold on your credit card plus your passport or licence details, with the amount varying by shop and machine.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Panama City?

Expect to pay around 5-10 PAB per day for a basic scooter in low season, rising to roughly 15-25 PAB per day in high season. Larger or newer models run higher, from about 25 PAB per day and up.

  • Prices climb from December through April, when the dry season brings peak tourist demand.
  • They ease off from May through November, during the rainy season, with the best value typically September to November.

When to book a rental scooter in Panama City?

If your dates fall in the dry season — mid-December to mid-April, with extra spikes around Carnival and Semana Santa — book ahead, since this is when demand and prices both peak. January to March is generally the best window for riding: dry, sunny, and still short of the busiest crowds. Travel in the rainy season, from May to November, and you'll usually find lower prices and easier availability; downpours tend to arrive in the afternoon, so mornings are often clear enough to ride.

Local traffic rules in Panama City

Panama drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on a scooter — rental helmets tend to be basic, so bringing your own is worth considering. Speed limits run roughly 40-60 km/h in the city, rising on the outskirts, and mobile phone use while riding is prohibited. Drink-driving laws are strict, enforced with roadside checks, so treat it as zero tolerance. Watch for unmarked speed bumps and potholes after rain, and avoid riding after dark, since street lighting is limited outside the main avenues.
