Bonn moves at the pace of the Rhine — slow, steady, and easy to follow on two wheels. Pedal along the river past Rheinaue park, cross into the old town for a look at Bonn Münster, and you will cover in an afternoon what would otherwise eat up a whole day of walking and bus transfers. Ride up to Alter Zoll for one of the best views of the river, or roll down the arcaded Poppelsdorfer Allee toward the baroque palace at its end. This is a city built for a bicycle, not against one.
The centre of Bonn is compact and flat, with wide, well-surfaced cycle paths threading the old town, the riverside parks and the Museumsmeile. There is no need to fight traffic or squeeze into a packed tram — a bike gets you door to door faster, and it also opens up the half-day trips that a car or bus makes needlessly complicated: a ride south along the Rhine to Bad Godesberg, or further out to the hills of the Siebengebirge, all on a well-marked, mostly flat riverside route.
For an ordinary bicycle, nothing more than your own two hands — Germany sets no licence requirement and no minimum age for cycling. If you would rather ride an e-bike, standard pedal-assist models capped at 25 km/h are treated the same way as regular bicycles, so the same applies. Most rental shops in Bonn will still ask for ID and take a deposit, usually held against a credit card, though for bicycles this is often lighter than what you would pay for a scooter or motorbike. No IDP is needed for bicycle hire.
Average rental price is EUR 3–8 per day during low season, rising to EUR 10–20 per day in high season. A premium touring bike or e-bike typically runs EUR 20–35 per day.
High season runs May to September, busiest of all in July and August, so book a few days ahead if you are travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when demand and prices both fall, though bicycle rental in Bonn continues year-round unlike the more seasonal motorbike and quad market. If you want mild weather, long daylight and thinner crowds on the popular routes, late May, June and September are the sweet spot.
Germany drives — and cycles — on the right. There is no helmet law for cyclists of any age, though wearing one is widely recommended, especially on the faster descents around the Siebengebirge. Bicycles need working front and rear lights after dark or in poor visibility; riding unlit is a common and reliably fined offence. Cyclists sharing the road with cars should note the standard 50 km/h limit in built-up areas, and mind the right-before-left rule at unmarked junctions. Cycling under the influence carries a criminal-liability threshold at 1.6 g/l blood alcohol, dropping to 0.3 g/l if you are involved in an accident, so it is best to leave the beer for after the ride.
