Brno rewards anyone willing to pedal. The old town closes up tight around Špilberk Castle and the twin spires of Petrov cathedral, but step outside the historic core and the city opens into forest paths, a lakeside promenade and a countryside battlefield — all linked by dedicated cycling paths that make a bicycle the easiest way to see more of Brno than the tram lines ever will. Ride out along the Svratka River in the morning, catch the breeze off the Brněnská přehrada by lunch, and you will have covered ground most visitors never reach on foot.
The historic center itself is compact and mostly flat, so getting around on two wheels is effortless from the first pedal stroke. What makes a bicycle the right call in Brno is everything just beyond that center: the reservoir, Veveří Castle and the Moravian countryside sit several kilometers out, connected by greenways that a bicycle handles comfortably and that a car simply can't use. There's no parking to hunt for in the old town either — you just ride in, lock up, and go exploring.
Nothing complicated: no licence is required to ride a bicycle at any age in the Czech Republic. Riders under 18 must wear a helmet, and children under 10 can only cycle on public roads with someone aged 15 or older alongside them. Most rental shops will still ask for an ID or passport and take a deposit, either as a card pre-authorization or in cash — an International Driving Permit isn't needed for a bike.
Expect to pay around 75–150 CZK per day for a standard city bike in low season, rising to roughly 300–600 CZK per day in high summer. E-bikes and higher-end mountain or road models run about 600–1200 CZK per day.
High season runs June to August, when the reservoir beaches and countryside trails are busiest and prices sit at their yearly peak — book a few days ahead if you're arriving in midsummer. Low season stretches from November through March, when demand drops and rates follow it down, though winter ice and near-freezing temperatures make riding genuinely impractical for stretches of that window. May, June and September tend to be the sweet spot: mild weather, long daylight and prices that haven't hit their summer high yet.
Traffic in the Czech Republic drives on the right. Cyclists under 18 are required to wear a helmet, and bikes need working lights and reflectors once visibility drops or after dark. The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.00‰ for every road user, cyclists included, so it's worth treating this as strictly as if you were behind the wheel. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on roads outside towns, and by law, drivers overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 m of space — 1 m if they're moving no faster than 30 km/h — which in practice makes Brno's roads noticeably more comfortable for riders than many other cities.
