Brno doesn't announce itself the way Prague does, and that's exactly why a scooter suits it so well. Climb the switchback road up to Špilberk Castle in a few minutes and the whole red-roofed old town opens up below you, or park beside Petrov and be inside the cathedral before the tour buses have even found parking. With a scooter under you, Brno stops being a single afternoon in the centre and turns into a full day of side trips — the reservoir, the hills, the countryside battlefields — all within easy reach.
The city's layout practically asks for two wheels. The historic core is compact and walkable, but the interesting stuff — the villa districts, the dam, the forests on the edge of town — sits just far enough out to make walking tiring and trams indirect. Traffic in Brno is calm by regional standards, and parking a scooter near Petrov or Špilberk takes seconds where a car would cost you half an hour circling for a spot. That's the whole appeal of a scooter rental in Brno: you get the freedom to string together a hilltop castle, a lakeside afternoon and a countryside memorial in one loop, on your own schedule.
For a moped or scooter up to 50cc, capped at 45 km/h, a category AM licence is enough, available from age 15. Anything up to 125cc calls for a category A1 licence, held from age 16 — and most rental companies will also want to see you're at least 18 before they hand over the keys. An International Driving Permit isn't required if you're arriving from within the EU, though it's worth carrying one anyway if your home licence isn't in a familiar format. Expect to leave a deposit, either as a card pre-authorisation or in cash, along with your passport or ID.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find scooters from around 120–160 CZK per day, while high summer rates typically run 350–550 CZK per day, and newer or larger-engine models can reach 600–900 CZK per day.
If you're chasing the lowest prices, aim for the low season between November and March — just know that winter riding in Brno isn't much fun, with genuine continental cold and occasional ice on the roads. The sweet spot is May, June and September: mild weather, long daylight and traffic that hasn't yet hit its midsummer peak. If your trip falls in July or August, book ahead, since that's when rates are highest and availability tightest across the city.
Czechs drive on the right, and a few rules are worth knowing before you set off. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a moped, scooter or motorcycle. The country has zero tolerance for alcohol behind the wheel — the legal limit is 0.00‰, full stop. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night, all year round. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads and 130 km/h on motorways, and using a hand-held phone while riding is against the law.
