Prague rewards anyone willing to swap the tram for two wheels. Glide along the Vltava riverside path from Náplavka to Podolí past houseboats and riverside cafés, then cut through Stromovka Park's wide gravel avenues where locals jog and families picnic. Climb Vyšehrad's bluff and you'll have the whole skyline — spires, bridges, the river bending below — almost to yourself, no tour group in sight.
The Old Town's cobblestones and tram tracks can be unforgiving on thin road tyres, but Prague's real secret is its riverside bike network: a flat, joined-up corridor along the Vltava that links most major sights faster than any tram can manage. You'll still want to walk or shift into a low gear for the pull up to Petřín Hill or Prague Castle, which is exactly why a sturdy city or hybrid bike, rather than a road racer, is the right tool here.
No licence is required to ride a bicycle in the Czech Republic, at any age. If you're travelling with children, keep in mind that under-10s may only ride on public roads with someone aged 15 or over alongside them, and anyone under 18 must wear a helmet by law. Adults are free to ride helmet-free, though we'd always recommend one on cobbled streets and tram lines. When you book, most rental shops will ask for an ID or passport and take a small deposit, either as a card pre-authorisation or in cash — no international driving permit is needed for a bicycle.
Expect to pay around 250–350 CZK per day for a basic city bike during low season, rising to roughly 450–700 CZK per day in high season. E-bikes and premium hybrids can run 600–900 CZK per day or more.
June through August is Prague's high season, with the warmest weather, the longest queues at the sights, and the highest daily rates — book a few days ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season: cheaper bikes, but genuine winter cold, ice and snow make riding impractical for much of it. The sweet spot is May, June or September, when the weather is mild, daylight runs long, and traffic is noticeably lighter than in midsummer.
Cars and bikes keep to the right in the Czech Republic. Cyclists under 18 must wear a helmet, and it's worth wearing one regardless of age on the tram tracks and cobbles of the centre. The country has zero tolerance on alcohol — a 0.00‰ blood-alcohol limit applies to cyclists just as it does to drivers. Drivers overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 m of space (1 m if travelling under 30 km/h), and bicycles need working lights and reflectors after dark or in poor visibility. Speed limits for motor traffic are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on the open road and 130 km/h on motorways, so ride defensively even on quieter stretches.
