Catania rewards anyone willing to see it slowly. Pedal out from Piazza del Duomo past the Elephant Fountain and you're minutes from La Pescheria, where fishmongers shout over crates of swordfish before the morning heat sets in. Ride on to the seafront and the city opens up completely — black lava rock, blue water, and Etna smoking quietly on the horizon. This is a place best explored on two wheels, and you can rent a bicycle in Catania on our website in a couple of clicks.
The old town is flat, compact, and increasingly friendly to cyclists, which makes a bike the fastest way to link the Duomo, the market, Castello Ursino, and Via Etnea without circling for parking. Head south and the coastal road runs level all the way to La Playa beach; head north and it drifts along the Lungomare to the fishing harbor at Ognina. If you want more of a challenge, Etna's foothills near Nicolosi offer one of Sicily's toughest climbs, all reachable from the same rental.
No licence is required for a standard bicycle or a pedal-assist e-bike, and nothing needs registering or insuring — faster throttle e-bikes are treated as mopeds and fall outside this. Each rental shop sets its own minimum age, and you'll normally be asked for photo ID. A deposit is standard practice, usually held on a credit card, with the amount scaled to the value of the bike; an International Driving Permit is not needed for a pedal bicycle.
Expect around EUR 3-8 per day for a basic city bike in low season, rising to EUR 12-20 per day in high season. E-bikes, road, and gravel bikes run roughly EUR 20-40 per day depending on the season and the shop.
High season runs June through August, plus the Easter period, when the coast gets busiest and prices sit at their highest. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter streets and the cheapest rates, though some seasonal outlets reduce their hours. For the best balance, aim for May, June, September, or early October — warm, dry, and far less crowded than midsummer, with easier availability if you book a little ahead.
Italy drives on the right. Cycle helmets aren't legally required for adult riders, but working lights and reflectors are mandatory from dusk and in poor visibility, and a reflective vest is required if you're riding outside built-up areas at night. In town, the general limit is 50 km/h, so drivers share the road at a manageable pace, though Catania's historic core still means watching for scooters and narrow lanes. If you plan to drink, note that Italy's blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, and zero for anyone under 21.
