Paphos rewards anyone willing to leave the sidewalk. Pick up a scooter and within ten minutes you can go from the Roman-era floor mosaics at the Paphos Archaeological Park to the harbour views by Paphos Castle, then keep riding north to the sea-carved tombs at the Tombs of the Kings — all without hunting for parking or waiting on a bus timetable. Rent a scooter in Paphos and the whole southwest coast of Cyprus opens up, from the sea-stack at Aphrodite's Rock to the wild sand at Coral Bay.
Paphos is really two towns for a rider: a compact old core where Kato Paphos, the harbour and the tombs sit close together on narrow, congested streets with little parking in summer, and a wider region where the real highlights — Coral Bay, the Akamas coast, Aphrodite's Rock — lie 10 to 40 minutes out along open coastal roads. A scooter handles both halves without the cost or hassle of a car, though if you're heading onto the rougher Akamas tracks, a sturdier model will serve you better than a small automatic.
Note that some inner Akamas tracks are rough enough that rental agreements may exclude them entirely — check with your operator before heading off-road.
For 50cc–125cc scooters, a full category B car licence is normally accepted; larger-engined models need a motorcycle category instead. Cyprus drives on the left, so if you're used to riding on the right, give yourself a few careful minutes to adjust before pulling into traffic. Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence, and expect to leave a deposit, usually a card hold. You're entitled to offer a card instead of handing over your passport if a shop asks for it. The general legal minimum age for powered two-wheelers is 18, though individual rental shops often set their own higher threshold for bigger bikes.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 5-10 EUR per day, rising to 15-25 EUR per day in high season, with premium, larger-cc models running 25-40 EUR per day.
June through August is high season — the busiest months, with the highest prices and the least availability, so book ahead if you're travelling in August. November to March is low season, with the cheapest rates and plenty of choice, though it's also the wettest stretch of the year. For the best balance of good weather and fair prices, aim for April, May, September or October, when the coast is warm and dry without the midsummer heat.
Drive on the left and overtake on the right; roundabouts run clockwise, and you give way to traffic already on them. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter, moped or motorcycle. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, lower for novice drivers, and hand-held phone use while riding is prohibited. Once you're geared up, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
