Picture swapping the resort shuttle for your own set of wheels: a quick spin past Nissi Beach in the morning, then out along the coastal road toward the cliffs and sea caves of Cape Greco by afternoon. That's the pace a scooter gives you in Ayia Napa — you stop where you like, linger at a cove nobody mentioned in the brochure, and skip the wait for a bus that only runs twice an hour in low season.
Ayia Napa is a compact resort town, and that's exactly what makes it scooter territory. Most of its best spots sit within a 15–20 minute ride of each other along one coastal road, parking is easy at beaches and viewpoints where cars struggle to get close, and the terrain stays flat to gently rolling — no mountain passes, no need for a heavier bike. If you want to rent a scooter in Ayia Napa, this is about as easy as riding gets.
For 50cc–125cc scooters, a full car licence (category B) is normally accepted — you don't need a separate motorcycle licence. Larger-engined scooters require a motorcycle category instead. The general legal minimum age for riding is 18, though rental shops often set their own, higher minimum depending on the vehicle. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a card hold; if a shop asks to hold your passport, you can decline and offer a card instead. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home licence.
A basic scooter runs roughly EUR 5–10 per day in low season and EUR 15–25 per day in high season, with larger-engine bikes, ATVs or buggies priced higher. Bigger scooters, quads and buggies can reach EUR 30–50+ per day at the top end.
June, July and August are peak season, with inland temperatures often above 35°C, the highest prices, and scooters selling out fast — book well ahead if you're coming in August. April, May, September and October give you warm, dry days without the midsummer heat, making them the most comfortable months to ride. November through March is low season: mild on the coast, cheapest rates, but also the wettest stretch of the year. Coastal Ayia Napa is rideable year-round — heat, not cold, is the real constraint here.
Cyprus drives on the left, so overtake on the right and give way to traffic already on a roundabout. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on scooters, mopeds and quads, and police do issue on-the-spot fines for riding without one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h on open roads, with cameras in use, so keep an eye on your speed through town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and hand-held phone use while riding is banned — hands-free only.
