Ljubljana rewards anyone willing to explore beyond its compact, pedestrian-only core, and a scooter is the easiest way to do that. Ride along the Ljubljanica embankment past the cafe tables and the arches of the Triple Bridge, then climb the short, steep road up to Ljubljana Castle for a view over the terracotta rooftops — a trip that would take considerably longer on foot. With a scooter you can park a few steps from the sights, then head further out to quieter corners the day-trippers never reach.

The old town's narrow, largely car-free streets keep distances short and speeds low, which is exactly the terrain a scooter is built for. The flat centre makes cruising between the river, the parks and the main square effortless, while the compact size of a scooter lets you tuck into parking spots a car never could. And because Ljubljana is small, you're never more than a short ride from open road — whether that's a longer loop out to a riverside castle or, for more confident riders, a full day trip toward the mountains.

Top 10 things to see in Ljubljana by scooter

  1. Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad) — a hilltop landmark above the old town, reached by a short, steep ride with panoramic views waiting at the top.
  2. Tivoli Park (Park Tivoli) — a large, flat green park right by the centre, perfect for an easy, scenic cruise.
  3. Ljubljanica River embankment (Ljubljanica) — a riverside promenade through the old town lined with cafes and bridges.
  4. Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) — the iconic pedestrian bridge and central meeting point of the old town.
  5. Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most) — home to the city's famous dragon statues, a classic quick photo stop.
  6. Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg) — the city's main square and a natural starting point for a ride around downtown.
  7. Metelkova City (Metelkova mesto) — an alternative art and culture quarter just a short ride from the centre, packed with street art.
  8. Žale Cemetery (Žale) — a Plečnik-designed cemetery park worth the longer, quieter ride out.
  9. Fužine Castle (Grad Fužine) — a riverside Renaissance castle east of downtown, a good destination for a longer loop.
  10. Lake Bled (Blejsko jezero) — an iconic alpine lake around an hour away, a popular day-trip route for confident riders on faster scooters.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Ljubljana?

For scooters up to 50cc and 45 km/h, you'll need a category AM licence; anything from 125cc up requires the corresponding motorcycle category, A1 or higher. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, usually 18 for motorised vehicles, and will ask for a deposit — normally held on a credit card — along with your passport or ID. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required for EU/EEA licence holders, but if your licence comes from outside the EU it's worth carrying one just in case.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Ljubljana?

Prices swing a lot with the seasons. In winter you can find scooters from around 5 EUR per day, while in peak summer expect 15-20 EUR per day, and 25-30 EUR per day for newer or higher-power models.

  • Cheapest: November-February, when demand drops and many outlets run low-season rates.
  • Most expensive: July-August, the height of the tourist season.
  • Everything in between follows the shift from spring into summer and back.

When to book a rental scooter in Ljubljana?

July and August are Ljubljana's high season, when prices peak and popular models get booked up early, so reserve ahead if you're travelling then. November through March is low season, with fewer riders around and prices as low as 5 EUR per day — though be aware some rental outlets scale back or close over winter. May, June and September strike a nice balance: mild weather, thinner crowds, and prices well below the summer peak.

Local traffic rules in Ljubljana

Slovenia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter or motorcycle, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas like central Ljubljana, rising to 90 km/h on open roads outside town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, so it's safest to treat any drinking before riding as off the table entirely.

Once you've got your licence and helmet sorted, just use the search form at the top of the page to rent a scooter in Ljubljana. Have a nice trip!
