Ljubljana rewards anyone willing to get off their feet, and a bicycle is the fastest way to feel that. Pedal up from Prešeren Square along the Ljubljanica River embankment, weave past the cafe tables under the Triple Bridge, then climb the short, steep switchbacks to Ljubljana Castle for a view over the whole terracotta-roofed old town. Nowhere else in the city do freedom and scenery come together so easily.
What makes this city made for cycling is its size and shape. The old town is largely pedestrianized, distances between sights are short, and the terrain is flat river-valley almost everywhere except a couple of optional climbs, so a bike gets you between landmarks faster than walking and with none of the parking headaches of a car. Rent a bicycle in Ljubljana and you can also roll straight out of the center onto longer loops, like the wooded trails circling the city, without ever needing four wheels.
No licence is required at any age, and there's no minimum age set by law — rental shops may simply ask an adult to sign for younger riders. An International Driving Permit isn't needed either. Most shops will still ask for a deposit and some form of ID before handing over the bike, and if you're under 18, wearing a helmet is required by law.
Expect to pay EUR 3–8 per day in low season, and EUR 10–20 per day in high season. E-bikes and premium city bikes run higher, typically EUR 20–35 per day.
High season runs through July and August, when the old town is busiest and prices sit at their peak. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter streets and the lowest daily rates — a great trade-off if you don't mind cooler weather. For the best balance of mild temperatures and manageable crowds, May, June and September are hard to beat.
Slovenia drives on the right, and cyclists are expected to use a cycle lane or path wherever one exists. Helmets are compulsory for cyclists under 18, and if you're riding at night or in poor visibility, your bike needs working front and rear lights plus reflectors. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h speed limit for motor traffic, so drivers sharing the road with you are moving slower than you might expect. The general blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, so treat any drinking before a ride as off the table.

When you make a reservation of a bicycle you also can order the following extra services and equipment: helmet, GPS navigation, clip pedals, side cases, rear rack, basket, light, gloves, speedometer, individual guide or tour, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to the address of your choice.
