Antwerp rewards anyone willing to explore beyond the Grote Markt on two wheels. Ride out from the guild houses and the Brabo Fountain toward Het Steen on the riverbank, then follow the Scheldekaaien along the water before ducking through the Diamantwijk on your way back — distances that feel long on foot shrink to a few easy minutes on a scooter. Cross the Sint-Annatunnel under the river and you will find yourself on the left bank, with Sint-Annastrand's sand underfoot and the whole city skyline laid out across the water. It is the kind of loop a scooter makes effortless and a bus never will.
The old center is built for walkers and cyclists, not cars — narrow, largely pedestrianized cobbled lanes, packed cycle paths and constant tram traffic make four wheels more trouble than they are worth. A compact scooter slips through where a car cannot go and parks in seconds where a car would circle for twenty minutes. Antwerp is also flat from end to end, so a small-wheeled scooter handles the whole city comfortably, though it pays to slow down on cobblestones and cross tram tracks at an angle rather than straight on.
To rent a scooter in Antwerp you need a moped licence — category AM in the EU system, split locally into class A (up to 25 km/h) and class B (up to 45 km/h). EU/EEA licences are accepted directly, and a full car licence often covers moped use if it was issued before the relevant cut-off date, though this depends on the rental agent's own policy. The general minimum age is 16, but most operators set their own minimum, commonly 18 and up. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence as a safe default. A deposit is standard practice, usually held on a credit card, along with your passport or ID.
A standard scooter rental in Antwerp runs about 5–8 EUR per day in low season and 10–15 EUR per day in high season, with premium and electric models closer to 15–25 EUR per day.
Book early for June through August if you want the best choice of vehicles, since this is both the priciest and busiest stretch of the year. May, June and September tend to offer the best riding conditions — mild temperatures and long daylight without midsummer crowds — while November to February brings the lowest prices but also cold, wet, shorter days. If you are flexible, shoulder-season months give you a good balance between fair weather and fair prices for your scooter hire in Antwerp.
Belgium drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both scooter riders and passengers, though not legally required for regular bicycles. Speed limits are generally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 70 km/h outside them in Flanders, with the blood alcohol limit set at 0.5 g/l and enforced through routine roadside checks. Watch for priority-to-the-right at unmarked junctions — traffic joining from your right often has the right of way, which catches many visiting riders off guard. Cyclists here have strong legal protections, so always give way when crossing a cycle lane.
