Antwerp rewards a bit of exploring beyond its Grote Markt postcard shot, and a quad-bike is a genuinely fun way to do it. Point it toward the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, whose spire you'll spot from half the old town, then keep going past Het Steen and along the Scheldt until the streets open up. Cross the river through the Sint-Annatunnel and you land on Sint-Annastrand, a proper urban beach where you can pull over, watch the barges pass, and pretend for an hour that you're nowhere near a city centre.

The old town itself is a maze of one-way streets, tram tracks and cyclists with the right of way, so anything bulky loses more time there than it saves. A quad is small enough to dart between the landmarks downtown, but its real value shows once you leave them behind — the long riverside quays, the Left Bank beach loop, or a wider circuit out to the old defense forts ringing the city. Cycling those distances takes effort; driving them in a car feels wasted. A quad covers the ground quickly and keeps you outdoors the whole way.

Top 10 things to see in Antwerp by quad-bike

  1. Grote Markt & Stadhuis — the Renaissance city hall and the natural start or finish point for any ride.
  2. Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal — Belgium's tallest church spire, towering over the old town just minutes from the docks.
  3. MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) — a riverside tower with a free rooftop viewpoint over the Scheldt and the harbour.
  4. Het Steen — the city's oldest building, a medieval fortress right on the riverbank.
  5. Antwerpen-Zuid / Scheldekaaien — the Left Bank quays, made for an easy cruise along the water.
  6. Sint-Annastrand — an urban river beach reached through the Sint-Annatunnel, a favourite quick loop from downtown.
  7. Centraal Station / Antwerp Zoo area — one of Europe's most ornate train stations, right beside the zoo.
  8. Diamantwijk (Diamond District) — the world-famous diamond quarter near Centraal Station, worth a slow pass for its atmosphere.
  9. Park Spoor Noord — a former rail yard turned green space north of the centre, good for a breather mid-ride.
  10. The outer forts route (Fort 8 Wommelgem and beyond) — 19th-century defense forts ringing the city, for a longer countryside loop away from traffic.

What do you need to rent a quad-bike in Antwerp?

Road-legal quads in Belgium must be registered and insured, and you'll need a driving licence — in practice a category B car licence covers most road quads, depending on how the model is homologated. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or older. A deposit is standard, usually taken by credit card or a card pre-authorisation, alongside your passport or ID. Non-EU visitors are advised to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, just to be safe.

How much does it cost to rent a quad-bike in Antwerp?

Expect to pay EUR 15–20 per day in low season and EUR 30–40 per day in high season, with premium models running EUR 45–60 per day.

  • Prices climb from June to August, when tourist demand and daylight hours peak.
  • They drop from November to February, when demand is lowest and days are short and cold.

When to book a rental quad-bike in Antwerp?

June through August is Antwerp's high season, with the best weather and the highest prices, plus a smaller bump around Easter and the May holidays. If you'd rather ride for less, November to March is the quiet stretch, though the weather is colder and daylight shorter. For the best of both worlds, May, June and September bring mild temperatures and long days without midsummer crowds — book a little ahead if you're aiming for peak season.

Local traffic rules in Antwerp

Belgium drives on the right. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 120 km/h on motorways; outside towns, Flanders sets 70 km/h against Wallonia's 90 km/h, so watch the signage as you cross regions. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and roadside checks are common. Priority to the right applies at unmarked junctions — traffic joining from your right has the right of way unless signs say otherwise, which catches out plenty of visiting riders. Antwerp also runs a low-emission zone with camera enforcement, so make sure your rental is registered for entry.
