Ankara doesn't announce itself the way Istanbul does, and that's exactly what makes it worth exploring on two wheels. This is a city of hills, ceremonial boulevards and pockets of history tucked behind modern sprawl — the kind of place where a scooter turns a slog into a pleasure. Ride up toward Ankara Kalesi for a view over the rooftops, then coast down into Hamamönü, where wooden Ottoman houses have been reborn as cafés. Add a quiet afternoon by the lake at Gölbaşı and you start to see why locals rate this capital far higher than its reputation suggests.
Ankara is spread wide, and its best sights don't sit conveniently together. The citadel demands narrow, steep lanes that a car simply can't thread, while the lake parks on the city's edges are too far for a comfortable walk and too fiddly for buses. A scooter closes that gap: you can park a step from the castle gate, then be at Lake Eymir twenty minutes later. Traffic in the center gets heavy and drivers assume they own the lane, so a small, nimble bike is genuinely the easier way to move through the city, not just the more fun one.
For scooters above the smallest moped class, Turkey requires the appropriate M or A1 category licence — a plain car licence generally won't cover you, and while some rental shops are relaxed about it, police checks are not. Carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home licence is strongly recommended. The usual minimum age is 18, though it can be higher for larger models. Expect to leave a deposit, either as a card hold or in cash; if a shop asks to keep your passport, a photocopy plus deposit is the safer option.
During low season, a basic scooter runs around 200 TRY per day. In high season that climbs to roughly 350–450 TRY per day, and newer or larger models can reach 500–600 TRY per day.
If you're visiting in June, July or August, book ahead — this is when demand and prices both peak. Outside that window, from around September through May, you'll find better rates and more availability, with December to February being the quietest and cheapest stretch of all. Booking a few days in advance during the summer months will save you both money and hassle.
Turkey drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any motorised two-wheeler, including small scooters, and this is actively enforced. Speed limits are generally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on rural roads, with motorcycles and scooters typically held to lower limits than cars. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for private drivers, so it's best treated as zero if you're riding. Use a hands-free set if you need your phone en route, and ride defensively — central traffic is dense and lane discipline is loose.
