Sochi doesn't feel like one city so much as three: a palm-lined seafront, a hillside of gardens and viewpoints, and, an hour inland, a genuine mountain range. A motorcycle is the only way to link all three in a single day — you can start on the embankment near the Sea Port, wind up through forest switchbacks to the Akhun observation tower for a Black Sea panorama, then push on toward the alpine village of Krasnaya Polyana while the coast disappears behind you in the mirrors.
The coastal strip in Sochi gets slow and congested in summer, with buses and rental cars nose to tail along the seafront road, so having a bike to filter past the queues and park in a spare metre of kerb makes a real difference. The real reward, though, is inland: the road toward Krasnaya Polyana climbs through a proper set of mountain switchbacks, the kind of riding a car handles competently but a bike handles joyfully, and it opens up waterfalls, caves and alpine resorts that are a slog by bus and awkward by car.
For anything up to 125cc and 11kW you'll need at least a category A1 licence; bigger machines require full category A, and a car licence alone does not cover either. If your licence isn't in Russian or Latin script, bring an International Driving Permit or a notarised translation to be safe. Most rental shops set their own minimum age, typically 18 to 21, and will ask to see your passport and licence and take a deposit, usually as a cash sum or a card hold.
Expect roughly 2,300–2,800 RUB per day in low season, rising to about 4,000–6,000 RUB per day for standard bikes at the July–August peak. Larger touring or adventure machines, such as BMW GS-class bikes, can run 6,000–12,000+ RUB per day in high season.
High season runs June to August, when demand and prices are both at their highest, so book a few days ahead if you're arriving in July or August. Low season stretches from November to March, with the mildest, most affordable riding weather generally falling in the shoulder months of April, May, September and October — Sochi's southern location keeps its season noticeably longer than the rest of Russia.
Russia drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any motorcycle or scooter. Headlights must stay on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 60 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h outside them, and the blood-alcohol limit is effectively zero, so plan to ride sober.
