Irkutsk is where Siberia stops feeling remote and starts feeling like open road. Rent a motorcycle here and the city's own sights — the wooden houses of the 130th Kvartal, the riverside walk along the Lower Embankment — are just the warm-up. The real ride is the run out to Lake Baikal, where the highway follows the Angara out of town, past the Taltsy Museum of Wooden Architecture, and drops you at the water's edge in Listvyanka. Climb to the Kamen Chersky viewpoint above the village and you'll see why people come from the other side of the planet for this lake.
Irkutsk suits two wheels better than most Russian cities. Inside town the distances are short and traffic is light, so you can hop between the historic quarter, the embankment and Znamensky Monastery without losing half a day to buses. Outside town, the ~70 km road to Listvyanka is the whole point of a Siberian motorcycle trip — a string of viewpoints and lakeside stops that a car window just flattens into scenery. If you want to go further, the gravel-and-ferry haul to Olkhon Island rewards riders who don't mind a long day in the saddle.
For anything up to 125 cc you'll need licence category A1; above that, category A. A regular car licence doesn't cover either. Minimum age is 18, though rental shops often set their own floor a little higher. Bring your passport and driving licence — if it isn't in Russian or Latin script, carry an International Driving Permit or a notarised translation. Expect to leave a deposit, either cash or a card hold, when you pick up the bike.
A standard rental bike runs from around 2,500 RUB per day in low season up to 3,500–4,500 RUB per day in high season; larger-displacement or adventure-touring models, the kind you'd want for the Olkhon run, cost roughly 6,000–9,000 RUB per day.
High season runs June to August, when prices peak and bikes get booked up fastest. Low season stretches from November to March, but Siberian winters make riding impractical, so most fleets shrink or close entirely over the cold months. The sweet spot is May or September — you'll get shoulder-season prices with still-rideable weather on the Listvyanka road.
Russia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any motorcycle or scooter. Headlights — dipped beam or daytime running lights — must stay on at all times, day and night. Speed limits are 60 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h outside them, dropping to 50 km/h for smaller mopeds. The blood-alcohol limit is effectively zero, and enforcement is strict, so plan to ride sober from the first kilometre to the last.
