London rewards anyone willing to escape the pavement. Point a motorcycle down the Mall toward Tower Bridge, or out through Richmond Park where deer graze beside the road, and the city opens up in a way the Tube never lets you see. Ride north to the Ace Cafe London on a Sunday morning and you will find yourself among riders who have been meeting there for decades — part of the city's motorcycling history rather than just a stop on a map.

London's centre is dense, its junctions are slow, and parking a car anywhere near the sights can eat up half your afternoon. A motorcycle slips through that congestion, often sidesteps the Congestion Charge and ULEZ fees that hit cars, and finds parking spots a car never could. It also puts day trips within easy reach: Box Hill and the Surrey Hills, the seafront at Brighton, or Windsor Castle are all slow and fiddly by train, but simple on two wheels.

Top 10 things to see in London by motorcycle

  1. Richmond Park — sweeping park roads with deer roaming free, a classic short ride from central London.
  2. Box Hill (Surrey Hills) — the region's best-known biker meeting point, with hairpin climbs and a famous viewpoint cafe.
  3. Regent's Park and Primrose Hill — skyline views over London and easy loops around the park's outer circle road.
  4. Tower Bridge — the iconic Thames crossing and a must for a city photo stop.
  5. Camden Market — a buzzy, biker-friendly neighbourhood, good for a coffee stop and people-watching.
  6. Ace Cafe London — a legendary biker cafe on the North Circular with regular meets and real motorcycling history.
  7. Greenwich and the Royal Observatory — a riverside route ending at the Prime Meridian with panoramic Thames views.
  8. Hampstead Heath — leafy hill roads and Parliament Hill's skyline viewpoint just north of the centre.
  9. Brighton seafront — a popular day trip south on the A23, ending on a lively promenade.
  10. Windsor and Windsor Great Park — a scenic western ride past Windsor Castle with long park roads to open up on.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in London?

Which licence you need depends on the bike's power: UK motorcycle categories (A1, A2, A) are tiered by engine output and rider age, so check with the rental company which class your chosen bike falls under. A provisional licence with only CBT training generally isn't enough to rent. An International Driving Permit isn't required. Rental firms typically set their own minimum age and minimum licence-holding period, usually higher than the legal minimum, and you should expect to leave a deposit, normally held on your credit card.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in London?

Expect around GBP 22-25 per day in low season, rising to roughly GBP 35-45 in high season, with premium models running GBP 55-80 or more per day.

  • Prices are lowest from November to February.
  • They climb through spring and peak from June to August.
  • Booking a little ahead in summer helps you get the model you want at the better rate.

When to book a rental motorcycle in London?

High season runs June through August, when demand and prices both peak. Low season stretches from November to February, with the cheapest daily rates of the year. If you can ride in May, June or September, you get long daylight hours and lighter traffic without paying full summer prices — a good middle ground worth booking a few weeks ahead.

Local traffic rules in London

Traffic keeps to the left, and roundabouts run clockwise, giving way to vehicles coming from your right. Helmets are compulsory by law for riders and passengers on motorcycles and mopeds. Speed limits are posted in mph: 30 mph in built-up areas (20 mph in many parts of London), 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on motorways and dual carriageways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.08% in England — the safest approach is simply not to drink before you ride. Riding with dipped headlights on at all times is standard practice and well worth following for visibility.
