London rewards anyone willing to escape the pavement. Point a motorcycle down the Mall toward Tower Bridge, or out through Richmond Park where deer graze beside the road, and the city opens up in a way the Tube never lets you see. Ride north to the Ace Cafe London on a Sunday morning and you will find yourself among riders who have been meeting there for decades — part of the city's motorcycling history rather than just a stop on a map.
London's centre is dense, its junctions are slow, and parking a car anywhere near the sights can eat up half your afternoon. A motorcycle slips through that congestion, often sidesteps the Congestion Charge and ULEZ fees that hit cars, and finds parking spots a car never could. It also puts day trips within easy reach: Box Hill and the Surrey Hills, the seafront at Brighton, or Windsor Castle are all slow and fiddly by train, but simple on two wheels.
Which licence you need depends on the bike's power: UK motorcycle categories (A1, A2, A) are tiered by engine output and rider age, so check with the rental company which class your chosen bike falls under. A provisional licence with only CBT training generally isn't enough to rent. An International Driving Permit isn't required. Rental firms typically set their own minimum age and minimum licence-holding period, usually higher than the legal minimum, and you should expect to leave a deposit, normally held on your credit card.
Expect around GBP 22-25 per day in low season, rising to roughly GBP 35-45 in high season, with premium models running GBP 55-80 or more per day.
High season runs June through August, when demand and prices both peak. Low season stretches from November to February, with the cheapest daily rates of the year. If you can ride in May, June or September, you get long daylight hours and lighter traffic without paying full summer prices — a good middle ground worth booking a few weeks ahead.
Traffic keeps to the left, and roundabouts run clockwise, giving way to vehicles coming from your right. Helmets are compulsory by law for riders and passengers on motorcycles and mopeds. Speed limits are posted in mph: 30 mph in built-up areas (20 mph in many parts of London), 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on motorways and dual carriageways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.08% in England — the safest approach is simply not to drink before you ride. Riding with dipped headlights on at all times is standard practice and well worth following for visibility.
