There's a particular pleasure in threading a motorcycle out of Chichester's compact centre and onto the open lanes toward the coast — past hedgerows and flint walls, with the South Downs rising on one side and Chichester Harbour glinting on the other. Head south and you're at West Wittering Beach in twenty minutes; head out along quieter routes and you'll find yourself in Bosham, the tidal village where legend says King Canute tried to command the waves, without ever touching a motorway.
Chichester rewards two-wheeled travel in a way cars simply can't match. The city centre is small and often clogged with parked cars, and the harbour lanes and Witterings beach roads that make this area special are narrow, winding, and awkward to navigate in anything wider than a handlebar. A motorcycle rental in Chichester lets you skip the search for parking near the harbour, cut through the South Downs on scenic B-roads, and reach villages that coach tours never see.
You'll need a full motorcycle licence — the UK grades entitlement by engine power and rider age (categories A1, A2 and A), so which bike you can take depends on its output. Riders on a provisional licence with only CBT training generally can't rent. Most operators set their own minimum age and require you to have held your licence for a minimum period, on top of the legal minimums, so it's worth checking with the rental company directly. No IDP is required for UK licence holders. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a hold on your credit card, with the amount depending on the bike.
Rates run from roughly 20-25 GBP per day in low season up to 30-45 GBP per day in high season, with premium models reaching 50-70 GBP per day.
High season runs June through August, stretching into September, when demand and prices both peak. Low season is November to February, when rates are lowest but some rural and coastal operators reduce hours or close altogether. For the best mix of good weather, light traffic and fair prices, aim for May, June or September — and book a little ahead if you're travelling during the summer months.
Remember that the UK drives on the left, with roundabouts running clockwise and priority given to traffic from your right. Helmets are compulsory by law for riders and passengers on motorcycles and scooters. Speed limits are posted in mph: 30 mph in built-up areas, 60 mph on single carriageways, and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. The blood alcohol limit in England is 0.08% — the safest approach is simply not to drink before you ride.
