Picture swapping the crawl along the coastal highway for the wind on your face as you lean into the curves above the Adriatic. That's what a motorcycle gets you in Budva — a straight shot down to Sveti Stefan's postcard islet, a lunch stop in Petrovac, or a full loop around the Bay of Kotor, all without waiting behind a tour bus. Renting here isn't a novelty; it's the fastest way to see more of Montenegro's coast than most visitors manage in a week.

Budva's old town is compact and mostly closed to cars, which is exactly why a bike suits it so well — you park just outside the walls and walk in, then ride straight out again toward whatever's next. The real appeal, though, is what surrounds the town: a narrow coastal road strung with beach villages, and inland switchbacks climbing toward Lovćen that turn a summer traffic jam into a non-issue. In July and August, when cars queue for parking in Rafailovići or Bečići, a scooter or motorcycle simply threads through.

Top 10 things to see in Budva by motorcycle

  1. Budva Old Town (Stari Grad) — a walled peninsula town, easy to park near and a natural start or end point for any loop.
  2. Mogren Beach — the closest scenic beach to the old town, a short coastal ride followed by a walk down from the cliffs.
  3. Sveti Stefan — Montenegro's most photographed view, about 6 km south along the coast road.
  4. Villa Milocer / Queen's Beach — a quieter cove right next to Sveti Stefan, worth the same short detour.
  5. Petrovac — a pretty coastal town roughly 15 km south, good for lunch, its own beach, and an old fort.
  6. Rafailovići and Bečići — long sandy beaches just outside Budva, made for easy beach-hopping.
  7. Kotor Old Town — about 30–40 minutes around the Bay of Kotor, the classic day trip from Budva.
  8. Ostrog Monastery — a more ambitious inland ride into the mountains, to a monastery built into a cliff face.
  9. Njegoš Mausoleum (Lovćen National Park) — reached via the old Kotor–Cetinje serpentine, prized for its hairpins and bay views.
  10. Jaz Beach — a wide-open beach a few km northwest, known for concerts and easy access.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Budva?

For scooters and light motorcycles, agencies generally expect an ordinary licence to cover machines up to 50cc, while anything larger requires a proper motorcycle licence matching its class. You'll usually need to be at least 18, and an International Driving Permit is required alongside your home licence. Expect a deposit, typically held on a card, plus a passport copy for the paperwork.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Budva?

Budget scooters run about 20-30 EUR per day in low season and 35-50 EUR in high season, while larger-displacement motorcycles or newer models can run 60-90+ EUR per day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring, peaking in July-August.
  • They ease off again through autumn as the coast quiets down.
  • Deep winter often means reduced hours or closed shops rather than lower prices.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Budva?

July and August are Budva's busiest and priciest months, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November through March is the low season, with fewer crowds and lower rates, but also fewer open rental shops along the Riviera. May, June and September hit the sweet spot — warm enough for comfortable riding, without the peak-season premium.

Local traffic rules in Budva

Montenegro drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town and 80 km/h on open roads outside settlements, unless signs say otherwise. The blood alcohol limit is just 0.03%, so plan on riding sober. Watch the inland switchbacks toward Kotor and Lovćen especially — narrow, unbarriered, and shared with tour buses on blind hairpins.
