Picture leaving the ramparts of the Palais des Papes behind you and, twenty minutes later, leaning into a bend on a quiet D-road with a stone village floating on a hilltop ahead. That's the pull of Avignon: the old town gives you the Pont d'Avignon and the papal skyline on foot, but the real reward sits just beyond it, in the Luberon, the Alpilles and the vineyards around Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Renting a motorcycle here turns a single postcard stop into a full day of postcards.

Avignon itself is compact and largely closed to cars in the historic center, so you won't miss four wheels downtown. The reason to rent a motorcycle in Avignon is what surrounds it: a ring of Provençal villages, gorges and wine roads all within 30 to 90 minutes, connected by winding roads where a car crawls and parking is a fight. Two wheels let you string Gordes, Roussillon and Sénanque Abbey into one loop, or point toward the Pont du Gard, and park right at the village gate instead of at its edge.

Top 10 things to see in Avignon by motorcycle

  1. Pont Saint-Bénézet (Pont d'Avignon) — the iconic half-bridge over the Rhône, right in town and the obvious first stop before you head out.
  2. Palais des Papes — the huge Gothic palace that dominates the skyline; park up and walk its ramparts.
  3. Rocher des Doms — a hilltop garden beside the palace with wide views over the Rhône and the bridge below.
  4. Les Baux-de-Provence — a dramatic hilltop village and ruined castle in the Alpilles, a favorite loop from Avignon.
  5. Pont du Gard — the Roman aqueduct bridge a short ride northeast, one of the most photographed sights in Provence.
  6. Gordes and the Luberon villages — twisty hill roads linking Gordes, Roussillon and Ménerbes, classic Luberon touring territory.
  7. Sénanque Abbey — a Romanesque abbey below Gordes, famous for lavender in season and a natural detour off the Luberon loop.
  8. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse — a village built around Europe's most powerful natural spring, an easy ride east of Avignon.
  9. Châteauneuf-du-Pape — a wine village just north with vineyard back roads and a ruined papal château on the hill.
  10. Mont Ventoux — the legendary "Giant of Provence," a serious climb for riders after a bigger day out.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Avignon?

For a 125cc scooter, an A1 licence works, or a category B car licence held at least two years plus a mandatory 7-hour training course. Larger machines need category A1 (from 16, up to 125cc) or A2 (from 18, power-restricted); full unrestricted access usually comes after holding A2 for two years. Rental companies in Avignon typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or higher for bigger bikes. You'll need a deposit, usually held by card pre-authorisation and refunded on undamaged return, and if you're arriving on a non-EU licence, bring an International Driving Permit to be safe.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Avignon?

Expect roughly 25-35 EUR per day in low season and 45-70 EUR per day in high season, with premium and larger-displacement models running 70-120 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring, peaking in July and August.
  • November through February is the cheapest and quietest stretch.
  • Booking ahead in summer matters — the best machines go first.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Avignon?

High season runs June through August, with the sharpest crush in late July and all of August, when prices sit at their highest and popular models can sell out. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest rates and the quietest roads. If you want warm weather without the crowds or the premium, May, June and September hit the sweet spot — and early October is still pleasant for a Luberon or Alpilles loop.

Local traffic rules in Avignon

France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any motorised two-wheeler, and yours needs to be ECE-approved with reflective stickers. Less obvious to visitors: CE-approved gloves are legally required too, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are generally 50 km/h in town, 80 km/h on rural two-way roads (watch for signs restoring 90 km/h in places) and 110 km/h on dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping effectively to zero for riders in their first three years of licence. Keep a hi-vis vest on the bike in case you need to stop roadside.
