Munich rewards anyone willing to cover ground by pedal. Glide through the Englischer Garten past the Eisbach surfers and beer gardens, then follow the Isar downstream toward Flaucher, where locals sunbathe on the river's gravel banks. On two wheels, the city opens up in a way a tram map never quite manages.
Munich's flat streets and dense network of dedicated bike lanes make it one of the easiest cities in Europe to ride. The Altstadt, Englischer Garten and Isar riverside sit close enough for a relaxed afternoon loop, while Nymphenburg and Olympiapark are within easy reach for a longer half-day ride — distances that would wear you out on foot but barely register with a bit of momentum under you.
Good news: no licence and no minimum age are required to rent a bike in Munich. Children under 8 ride on the pavement, and from age 11 riders move onto the road or cycle path. If you're renting an e-bike limited to 25 km/h pedal assist, it's still classed as a bicycle, so the same rules apply. A faster S-Pedelec (up to 45 km/h) is treated as a moped and needs a licence and insurance plate, but that's not what you'll find at most bike rentals. Expect a modest deposit, or sometimes just an ID, when you pick up your bike — no International Driving Permit needed for cycling.
Average prices for a bike rental in Munich run EUR 3-10 per day during low season and EUR 12-20 per day in high season, with e-bikes and premium touring models at EUR 20-30 per day.
High season runs May to September, busiest in July and August with school holidays, so booking ahead pays off if you want your pick of bikes. Low season stretches November to March, when prices drop and city bike rental keeps running year-round even if the weather turns cold and wet. For the best balance of mild weather and lighter crowds, late May, June, and September are hard to beat.
Germany drives on the right. There's no helmet law for cyclists at any age, though wearing one is widely recommended. Bikes need working front and rear lights after dark or in poor visibility — riding unlit is a commonly fined offence. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h outside them. At unmarked junctions, right-before-left applies, even on quiet residential streets, and trams generally have the right of way. Cyclists face a criminal-liability alcohol threshold of 1.6 g/l blood alcohol, dropping to 0.3 g/l if you're involved in an accident — best to keep it to zero if you're riding.
