Moscow rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and a bicycle is the easiest way to do it. Roll out of Gorky Park along the river, climb toward the Sparrow Hills viewpoint for a full skyline framed by the bend of the Moskva River, and you will have seen more of the city in an afternoon than most visitors manage in three days on the metro. Rent a bicycle in Moscow and the whole riverside opens up to you, at your own pace, with no timetable to chase.
What makes Moscow work so well on two wheels is the sheer scale of its parks and embankments. The main sights are spread wide — Gorky Park, Sparrow Hills, VDNKh, Tsaritsyno — distances that wear a walker down but that a bike eats up easily, especially now that the city has strung together a growing network of dedicated paths and flat riverside promenades. Central traffic is heavy and the metro means constant transfers underground, so pedaling the embankments gives you a scenic, flexible route between landmarks that neither driving nor the subway can offer.
Renting a bicycle here is refreshingly simple — no licence and no IDP required. Anyone can ride, though on public roads (as opposed to parks, cycle paths or courtyards) riders should be at least 14. Most shops will still ask for a passport and a deposit before handing over the bike, with the amount set by the individual operator rather than fixed by law.
Expect around 280–350 RUB per day in low season, rising to roughly 700–1200 RUB per day in high season for a standard city bike. Electric or premium hybrid models typically run 1500–2500+ RUB per day at peak times.
June through August is high season and the best weather for riding, so book ahead if you are planning a summer trip. From November to March the city turns cold and icy, demand falls, and you will find lower prices — if you can find an open shop at all. May and September make a good compromise: milder crowds, still-decent weather, and easier last-minute booking.
Russia drives on the right. There is no helmet law for cyclists, though it is sensible to wear one regardless. Speed limits sit at 60 km/h in built-up areas (some Moscow through-roads allow 80) and 90 km/h outside them — figures that matter more for scooters and cars than for a bicycle, but worth knowing if you are sharing the road. The blood-alcohol limit is effectively zero, so leave the bike parked after a glass of wine. One rule specific to cyclists: you must dismount and walk your bike across pedestrian crossings, and keep to the right-hand edge of the roadway wherever you ride on it.
