Sevastopol rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and a bicycle is the best way to do it. Start at Grafskaya Pristan, where the waterfront colonnade opens onto Sevastopol Bay, then roll along Primorsky Boulevard with the Monument to the Scuttled Ships rising just offshore. From there the coast keeps unfolding — ride on toward Fiolent's cliffs or the fjord-like bay at Balaklava, and you'll pass through corners of the city most visitors on foot never reach.
This is a hilly, spread-out coastal city, and its landmarks don't cluster conveniently near a hotel strip — the harbor center, Balaklava, Fiolent and the ruins of Khersones sit several kilometers apart along the shore. A bicycle closes those distances far faster than walking and gives you more freedom than a taxi to string several stops into one day. Traffic downtown is easy to handle on two wheels, and the coastal roads south of the city are the kind of scenic riding a car would just rush past.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Ukraine — anyone can pedal off. Most rental points ask for a minimum age around 16 and a modest deposit, held in cash or on a card; holding your passport as security is not a legitimate practice, so don't hand it over. No international driving permit is needed for a bike, unlike for a scooter or motorcycle in the same fleet.
Expect to pay roughly 150-200 UAH per day in low season for a standard city or hybrid bike, rising to about 350-500 UAH per day in high season. Higher-end or electric models run around 600-900 UAH per day.
High season runs May through September, with July and August the busiest and most expensive stretch — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and availability is easy, though the best riding weather is really late May, June and September: warm and dry without the peak-summer crowds or heat.
Ukraine drives on the right. Cyclists should keep to a bike lane where one exists, or hug the right edge of the road, and carry reflective elements if riding at night outside built-up areas. Helmets aren't legally mandatory for adult cyclists, but they're a sensible habit given the hills and coastal traffic. Speed limits for motor vehicles sharing the road are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h outside them, and Ukraine keeps an effectively zero-tolerance approach to drink-driving. Note that martial law has been in force since 2022, with nightly curfews and checkpoints in some areas — worth checking current conditions before you plan a route.
