Marrakesh rewards anyone willing to cover a little more ground than their own feet allow. Pedal out from the chaos around Jemaa el-Fnaa and within minutes you can be threading past the cobalt walls of the Majorelle Garden in Gueliz, or slipping into the quiet tiled courtyards of the Bahia Palace. A bicycle lets you dip into the medina's alleys one moment and coast along a wide boulevard the next, without waiting on a taxi or getting lost trying to walk the whole city in the heat.
The medina itself is dense and best explored on foot in short bursts, but Marrakesh as a whole sprawls — Gueliz, the Kasbah and the Palmeraie sit far enough apart that walking between them wastes half a day, while a taxi feels like overkill for a fifteen-minute hop. A bike closes that gap neatly, and it opens up half-day loops beyond the ramparts that you simply can't do on foot. Traffic can look hectic, with scooters and mule carts sharing the same lane, but it moves slowly enough that a confident rider sticking to main routes has no trouble keeping up.
Good news for cyclists: no licence is required at any age. There's no deposit hassle either in most cases, though some rental shops may still ask for ID or a small refundable deposit on higher-end models. If you're also considering a scooter or motorbike during your stay, note that those do require a licence and often an International Driving Permit, but for a standard bicycle rental you can simply walk up and ride.
Expect to pay around 70-90 MAD per day in low season, rising to 120-180 MAD per day in high season. E-bikes and higher-spec models typically run 200-300 MAD per day.
Aim to book ahead if you're travelling between March and May or September to November — this is when the city is busiest and prices climb accordingly. If you don't mind the heat, July and August offer the lowest rates and easy availability, while a winter visit outside the holiday rush also tends to be both cool and affordable. Booking a day or two in advance during peak months is a safe habit; outside those windows you can often arrange a bike on the spot.
Morocco drives on the right, and you should overtake on the left. Helmets aren't a legal requirement for cyclists, though it's always sensible to wear one on busier roads. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and rise outside built-up areas, but on a bicycle you'll naturally stay well under those figures. Morocco takes a strict zero-tolerance approach to riding after drinking, and it's worth keeping in mind that the roads are shared with pedestrians, donkey carts and the odd scooter riding against traffic — so stay alert, especially near the medina's busier entrances.
