Berlin rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and there's no better way to do that than on two wheels. Pedal from the Brandenburg Gate down toward the East Side Gallery, where the old Berlin Wall still stretches along the Spree covered in murals, and within an hour you've crossed more of the city's history than most visitors see in three days on foot. Rent a bike in Berlin and the whole city opens up — lakes, parks, palaces and neighbourhoods that sit just past the reach of the U-Bahn map.
Few cities suit cycling as naturally as this one. Berlin is flat, spread out, and laced with dedicated bike lanes that connect the center to green spaces and waterways without much fuss. Distances that would wear out a walker, and destinations that public transport simply doesn't reach directly, become easy on a bike. A day trip to a lake on the edge of town is no longer a project — it's just a ride.
For an ordinary bicycle, you need nothing more than yourself — there's no licence requirement and no minimum age. If you'd rather cover ground faster on an e-bike limited to 25 km/h, the same applies, since it's legally treated as a regular bicycle. Rental companies will usually ask for a deposit or your ID, though the amount is smaller and simpler than what you'd leave down for a scooter or car. No International Driving Permit is needed for a standard bike rental in Berlin.
Expect to pay 3–8 EUR per day during low season and 10–20 EUR per day in high season. If you want an e-bike, cargo bike or a premium hybrid model, budget 20–35 EUR per day.
High season runs from May to September, peaking in July and August, so book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices ease off and bike rental — unlike scooters or motorbikes, which often shut down for winter — keeps running in the city year-round. For the sweet spot, aim for late May to June or September: mild weather, long daylight, and noticeably lighter traffic than midsummer.
Germany drives on the right, and cyclists share that side of the road. There's no helmet law for cyclists of any age, though wearing one is widely recommended, especially if you're new to city traffic. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h outside them, though these matter more for cars than for a bike. If you're cycling in the dark, make sure your bike has working front and rear lights — riding unlit is a commonly fined offence. Right-before-left applies at unmarked junctions, and cyclists face a legal alcohol threshold of 1.6 g/l, dropping to 0.3 g/l if you're involved in an accident, so it's best to keep the ride sober.
Berlin's bike lanes make it easy to ride confidently even if you've never cycled somewhere new before. If you're ready to rent a bike in Berlin, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
