Bandung sits at 750 metres, and you feel it the moment you step outside — the air is cooler than almost anywhere else in Java, and the streets around the old Dutch quarter are made for wandering slowly rather than rushing through. Pedal past Gedung Sate in the early morning light, or roll down Braga Street while the Art Deco cafés are still opening their shutters, and the city starts to feel like something you're discovering rather than just visiting.
This is a city built for two wheels. The colonial-era core is compact and mostly flat, side streets carry a fraction of the traffic you'd find in Jakarta or Surabaya, and the cool highland climate means you can actually enjoy the climb rather than dread it. A bike also gets you into the hilly northern districts — Dago, Punclut, the road up toward Lembang — that crawl by car but open up beautifully at cycling pace.
Renting a bicycle in Bandung is refreshingly simple — no licence, no registration, and no International Driving Permit required, since none of that applies to pedal bikes here. There's no legal helmet requirement for cyclists either, though wearing one is always a sensible idea on the busier city streets. Most rental shops will still ask for a small deposit or a copy of your ID as security, and some set their own minimum age for renters, so it's worth checking when you book.
A basic city bike runs roughly 45,000–60,000 IDR per day in low season and around 70,000–100,000 IDR per day during high season. If you want something sturdier for the hills — a mountain bike, gravel bike, or an electric bike for the Lembang climb — expect around 150,000–250,000 IDR per day.
High season runs from May to September, peaking in July and August, with a second small spike around Christmas and New Year — book a few days ahead if you're arriving then, since good bikes get snapped up. Low season falls between November and March, wettest in December through February; prices drop and availability is easier, though afternoon downpours are common, so plan rides for the morning.
Indonesia drives on the left, and while that mostly concerns motorised traffic, it's worth keeping in mind as you navigate junctions and roundabouts on a bike too. Traffic can be dense with loose lane discipline, so ride defensively and don't assume vehicles will give way. There's no helmet law for cyclists, but a helmet is still a smart choice given the mix of scooters and cars sharing the road. Indonesia treats drink-driving as zero tolerance, and the same caution applies whether you're on two wheels or four — ride sober and stay alert, especially on wet roads after a sudden tropical downpour.
