Bali doesn't reveal itself from the back seat of a taxi. The island opens up when you're the one steering — ducking down a side lane in Ubud toward the emerald steps of the Tegallalang Rice Terraces, or catching the last light over the ocean at Uluwatu Temple with nothing between you and the view. On a scooter, the in-between places — the temple gates, the warungs, the surf breaks — stop being things you pass and start being things you stop for.
Bali simply isn't built for cars. Roads narrow to a single lane through rice paddies, parking is an afterthought everywhere except the big resorts, and traffic between the tourist hubs can crawl to a standstill in high season. A scooter slips through all of it, gets you a parking spot right at the temple entrance, and turns a 40-minute car crawl into a 15-minute ride. If you're weighing a **scooter rental in Bali**, this is really the only way locals and long-stayers get around.
You'll need a valid motorcycle licence from home plus an International Driving Permit — a car licence alone doesn't cover you here. The legal riding age in Indonesia is 17, though many shops set their own minimum. Expect to leave a deposit, and some places will ask to hold your passport as security; a cash deposit or ID copy is usually accepted instead if you'd rather keep your passport with you.
A standard automatic scooter runs from around 45,000–55,000 IDR per day in low season up to roughly 70,000–100,000 IDR per day in high season. Step up to a newer or larger model and you're looking at 120,000 IDR or more per day.
High season runs May to September, peaking in July and August, with a second short rush around the holidays. Low season stretches November to March, wettest in December and January. If you're after the best price and the widest choice of bikes, book ahead for the July–August window; travelling in the shoulder months gives you more flexibility and cheaper daily rates.
Indonesia drives on the left. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger and are actively checked in tourist areas, so don't skip one. Speed limits generally sit around 50 km/h in towns and up to 80 km/h on out-of-town roads — follow the posted signs. Ride with your headlight on even in daylight, as it's required by law. Drink-driving is treated as zero tolerance, and police checks routinely ask foreign riders for a licence and IDP, so keep both on you.
