Picture swapping the tourist shuffle for the seat of a quad bike rental in Ubud, mud spraying off the tyres as you climb toward the green stairways of Tegalalang Rice Terrace or splash through a river crossing on the way to Tegenungan Waterfall. This is Bali the way locals actually move through it — off the asphalt, into the paddies, jungle and back roads that a scooter simply cannot reach.
Ubud and the wider south of the island were never built for straight, fast roads. Rice paddies are laced with narrow raised paths, rivers cut across the countryside, and the volcanic slopes around Kintamani turn to loose gravel and mud the moment you leave the main route. A car can't fit down these tracks and a scooter has no grip on them, but a quad bike is made exactly for this mix of on-road hops and off-road adventure, which is why ATV tours in Bali have become one of the island's signature experiences rather than just a way to get from A to B.
Quad bikes here are run mostly as guided off-road tours rather than free self-drive rentals, since these ATVs aren't registered for public roads. Most operators don't ask for a licence for that reason, but you should still bring your home driving licence and an International Driving Permit just in case, along with a passport for identification. The usual minimum age is around 17, matching Indonesia's legal licensing age, though individual operators often set their own limit. A deposit is standard practice, and some shops will ask to hold your passport or ID as security instead of cash.
Expect around 230,000–280,000 IDR per day in low season for a standard self-drive rental, rising to roughly 400,000–600,000 IDR in high season. Guided tour packages, which make up most of the market, typically run 250,000–500,000 IDR per person regardless of the time of year, while larger or premium two-seat quads and longer guided routes can reach 700,000–1,000,000+ IDR per day.
High season runs May to September, peaking hard in July and August, with a short second spike around Christmas and New Year — book a few days ahead if you're travelling then, since good operators fill up. Low season stretches November to March, wettest from December to February, and is when you'll find the calmest prices and the least competition for a slot.
Indonesia drives on the left. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike and checked regularly in tourist areas, so keep yours on even on a private track. Speed limits sit around 50 km/h in built-up areas and up to 80 km/h out of town, though quad routes themselves are usually slower by nature of the terrain. Drink-driving enforcement is effectively zero tolerance, so save the Bintang for after the ride.
