Picture a warm afternoon along Chile's central coast, salt air off the Pacific, and the Andes hazy in the distance behind you. A scooter is the easiest way to string it all together — from a quick photo stop at the Reloj de Flores to sunset over Muelle Vergara, with nothing but open road in between. Rent a scooter in Viña del Mar and you can chase the coastline at your own pace, ducking into quiet corners most visitors on foot never reach.
Viña del Mar is built for this. The main coastal strip is flat, the avenues are wide, and parking a scooter takes seconds where a car would cost you twenty minutes circling the block. Traffic along the seafront is easy to read, and a scooter lets you stitch together the beach, the hilltop palace and even a run up to Valparaíso in one unhurried afternoon — a route that would eat your whole day on foot or waiting for buses.
Chile treats scooters as motorcycles for licensing purposes, so a car licence on its own won't be enough — you'll need a valid motorcycle entitlement (Class C locally, or the equivalent category on your home licence). The legal minimum age is 18, though most rental companies set their own minimum, often a little higher. An International Driving Permit isn't strictly required to drive on a valid foreign licence during a tourist stay, but it's worth carrying anyway, since individual rental desks sometimes ask for one. Expect a deposit, usually pre-authorised on a credit card in your own name — if a shop asks you to hand over your passport instead, it's fine to say no.
Average rental prices run around 18,000–22,000 CLP per day in low season, rising to roughly 30,000–40,000 CLP per day in high season. Larger or premium models can run 45,000–60,000 CLP per day.
If you're set on visiting during December to February, book well ahead — availability tightens and prices sit at their highest as the whole coast fills up for summer and the festival. Aiming for June to August instead gets you the lowest daily rates and the least competition for bikes, though the shoulder months on either side often strike the best balance between good weather and manageable prices.
Chile drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h near schools and on shared residential streets. Chile's alcohol limits are strict and tiered — roughly from 0.3 g/L you're already over the line, and above about 0.8 g/L you're facing licence suspension or worse, so the safest rule for riders is simply zero drinks. Scooters must also ride with their headlight on at all times, day included, and lane splitting between cars isn't permitted.
