Antofagasta doesn't ask you to walk it — it stretches long and thin along the Pacific, with the desert pressing in from behind. A scooter is what turns that shape into an advantage: one morning you're at the clock tower on Plaza Colón, and twenty minutes later you're standing under the wave-carved arch of Monumento Natural La Portada, wind off the ocean, nobody else's schedule to follow. Ride the coastal road down to the cliffs at Farellón Costero, or just cruise Avenida Grecia at sunset with the water on one side and the city on the other. If you want to rent a scooter in Antofagasta, this is exactly the kind of city that rewards it.
The reason it works so well here is geography. Antofagasta has wide, mostly flat avenues, no real hills near the shoreline, and traffic that's manageable rather than chaotic. Buses run the main routes but leave the desert lookouts and the southern coastline poorly served, which is precisely where a scooter earns its keep. A scooter rental in Antofagasta lets you string together downtown, the beaches and the desert monuments in a single day, stopping wherever the view asks you to.
Chile treats any engine-powered scooter as a motorcycle for licensing purposes, so you'll need a valid motorcycle licence — a car licence on its own isn't enough. The legal minimum age is 18, though rental shops often set their own minimum, sometimes a little higher. A deposit is standard, usually held or pre-authorised on a credit card in your own name; be wary of any shop that asks to hold your passport instead. An International Driving Permit isn't strictly required, but it's worth carrying one just in case a rental company or traffic officer asks for it.
Prices are listed in CLP. A basic scooter runs around 5,000–5,500 CLP per day in low season, climbing to roughly 9,000–12,000 CLP per day in high season. Larger or newer models go for about 15,000–25,000 CLP per day.
December through February is high season — summer in the southern hemisphere and the busiest stretch for anything on wheels along the coast, so book ahead if you're travelling then. June to August is low season, with the best prices and easiest availability. Because the Atacama coast is dry and mild nearly year-round, Antofagasta rides well outside the summer crush too — the shoulder months often give you the best balance of good weather and lower rates.
Chile drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any scooter, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas (30 km/h near schools and on many residential streets), up to 100 km/h on rural roads, and 120 km/h on motorways. Keep your headlight on at all times, even in daylight — it's required for motorcycles and scooters. Alcohol limits are strict and tiered, with penalties starting from a low blood-alcohol level, so the safest approach is simply not to drink before riding.
