Turku rewards anyone willing to cover a bit of ground. The old centre hugs the Aura River, but the city's best moments — a swim on Ruissalo, a wander through the pastel lanes of Naantali — sit just far enough away that walking gets old fast. Rent a scooter in Turku and you can start the morning at the medieval walls of Turku Castle, follow the river past the cathedral, and still have time to catch the sea breeze on the coast before dinner.
The city centre is flat and easy, which makes it forgiving for a first ride, while the sights that really make Turku worth the trip lie a few kilometres out along quiet roads with light traffic. That's the gap a scooter closes better than anything else: too far to walk, too fiddly for a bus timetable, too much fun to do it by car. The narrow streets and old bridges around downtown also favour something small enough to park anywhere.
For 50cc scooters capped at 45 km/h, Finland requires an AM moped licence, available from age 15. Anything bigger, from 125cc up, calls for a full motorcycle licence. EU licences are accepted as they are, and an International Driving Permit generally isn't needed. Rental companies usually ask for their own minimum age, often 18, and take a deposit as a hold on your card.
Prices run from roughly 5-10 EUR a day in low season up to 15-25 EUR a day in high season, with newer or larger-engine models reaching 25-40 EUR a day.
June, July and August are Turku's high season — long daylight, warm weather and the busiest riding, so book ahead if you're coming then. November through March is low season, with fewer riders out and softer prices, though scooter rental in Finland is a seasonal business and options thin out over the darkest winter months. Late May to early September is the sweet spot for reliable riding weather.
Finland drives on the right. Helmets are required by law for scooter and moped riders and their passengers. Headlights must stay on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are typically 50 km/h in town, dropping to 30-40 km/h near schools and in some centres, 80 km/h on rural roads, and up to 100-120 km/h on motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 ‰, so plan to ride sober. Keep an eye out for elk and deer near dawn and dusk, especially outside the city.
