Stockholm rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and a scooter is the easiest way to do it. Ride out across the water to Djurgården for the Vasa Museum, wind through the cobbled lanes of Gamla Stan, then climb up to Södermalm for a view over the rooftops — all in one afternoon, at your own pace, without waiting on a bus or a ferry timetable. Scooter rental in Stockholm turns a city normally seen in disconnected chunks into one continuous ride.

The city is built for it. Central Stockholm is flat, compact, and split into distinct islands and districts by water, so a scooter bridges the gaps that would otherwise mean a walk to a bridge or a wait for a ferry. Traffic is orderly, drivers are used to sharing the road with two wheels, and the cycle and scooter infrastructure is genuinely good, so getting around never feels stressful. If you want to rent a scooter in Stockholm, this is about as forgiving a city as it gets.

Top 10 things to see in Stockholm by scooter

  1. Gamla Stan — Stockholm's medieval old town, with the Royal Palace and cathedral tucked among narrow cobbled lanes best reached by scooter, then explored on foot.
  2. Djurgården — a green island park with wide, paved paths linking Skansen, the Vasa Museum and the ABBA Museum, and one of the easiest scooter loops in the city.
  3. Skansen — the world's oldest open-air museum, sitting right on the Djurgården route.
  4. Vasamuseet — home to the salvaged 17th-century warship Vasa, a short ride from Skansen.
  5. Fjällgatan — a classic elevated viewpoint on Södermalm looking back over Gamla Stan and the harbour, a quick climb by scooter.
  6. Monteliusvägen — a cliffside path on Södermalm with a panoramic view over central Stockholm and Lake Mälaren, worth parking nearby and walking.
  7. Rosendals Trädgård — an organic garden and café on Djurgården, a relaxed stop for coffee mid-loop.
  8. Långholmen — a former prison island turned park, with beaches and swimming spots easily reached over the bridge.
  9. Kungsträdgården — a central park that makes a good starting point before heading toward the water or Gamla Stan.
  10. Stadshuset — the iconic City Hall on Kungsholmen, with a lakeside promenade that's a pleasant ride in itself.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Stockholm?

For a Class II moped, capped at 25 km/h, you'll need a moped certificate or a driving licence, and you must be at least 15 years old. Faster Class I mopeds, up to 45 km/h, require an AM licence, also from age 15. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required, though many rental operators will still ask to see your home licence alongside it. Expect a deposit on your card, with the amount depending on the operator and the vehicle.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Stockholm?

Prices swing a lot with the season. On our own listings you'll find scooters from around 55–90 SEK per day in low season, while standard rentals in peak summer typically run 250–450 SEK per day. Higher-spec models or ones with delivery included can reach 500–700 SEK per day and up.

  • June to August is when demand and prices peak.
  • November through February is cheapest, though also outside the practical riding season.
  • Booking early in spring locks in better rates before summer demand kicks in.

When to book a rental scooter in Stockholm?

High season runs June to August, when the city is at its liveliest and prices are highest — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with much lower prices but cold, dark, sometimes icy conditions that make riding impractical. The sweet spot is May to September, when daylight is long, the weather cooperates, and you can still find a reasonable rate if you book ahead of the July rush.

Local traffic rules in Stockholm

Sweden drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for anyone riding a moped or motorcycle, and headlights must stay on at all times, day or night. The blood-alcohol limit is just 0.02%, effectively zero tolerance, so don't ride after even a single drink. Speed limits are typically 50 km/h in built-up areas, often lower near schools, rising to 70–100 km/h on rural roads outside the city. Stick to the marked cycle and scooter paths where they exist — they're extensive, well signed, and the safest way to move through town.
