San José isn't a city you want to sit through in a taxi. Between the Teatro Nacional and the coffee stalls of the Mercado Central, the streets of the Central Valley are close together and often clogged, and a scooter lets you slip past the queue of cars idling on Paseo Colón. Ride out to the Mirador de Aserrí for sunset over the valley, or spend a slower afternoon weaving between the museums downtown — either way, you're seeing the city on your own schedule, not the bus's.
San José's traffic is dense and often gridlocked, so two wheels save real time getting between downtown sights and the neighborhoods just beyond them. Distances between the center and day-trip spots like Cartago or the Poás volcano are short-to-moderate and mostly paved, well within reach of a scooter without needing anything built for rough terrain. And where a car means circling for a spot, a scooter parks right outside the museum door.
You'll need a motorcycle-class licence — a standard car licence generally isn't accepted beyond the very smallest machines. An International Driving Permit isn't required. Rental companies commonly set their own minimum age above the legal driving age of 18, and you should expect to leave a deposit, usually as a hold on a credit card in the main driver's name.
Prices for a scooter rental in San José start from around 2,600 CRC per day in low season, rising to roughly 4,000–6,500 CRC per day in high season. Larger or newer models can run 8,000–15,000+ CRC per day.
High season runs December to April, the dry "verano," peaking around Christmas, New Year and Easter — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches May to November, with September and October bringing the heaviest rain but also the lowest prices, so if your plans are flexible, that's when a scooter hire in San José costs the least.
Costa Rica drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers, and motorcycles must run with headlights on even during the day. Speed limits sit around 40–60 km/h in built-up areas and up to 80 km/h on rural highways, with radar and fixed cameras common. Drink-driving is treated as zero-tolerance, so plan accordingly if you want to rent a scooter in San José and explore safely.
