San José doesn't sit flat — it sits in a bowl, with volcanoes on every side and coffee farms climbing the hills before you've even left the suburbs. That's exactly the terrain a quad bike was built for. Rent a quad in San José and within the hour you can be winding up toward the crater at Poás Volcano National Park or pulling over at a lookout above the Orosi Valley, coffee fields and a colonial church laid out below you. This isn't a city you tour from a bus window — it's one you climb into.

The roads around the capital are steep, twist through farmland, and occasionally give up on pavement altogether — awkward in a rental car, easy on a quad. A quad's ground clearance and manoeuvrability turn what would be several separate guided day-trips into one loop you run yourself, at your own pace, stopping wherever the view earns it. Distances to Poás, Irazú, Cartago and Orosi are all short, thirty to sixty minutes, but the road gains elevation fast, and a quad handles that climb without fuss.

Top 10 things to see in San José by quad bike

  1. Poás Volcano National Park — the classic day trip from San José: an active crater and lake reached via scenic roads through Alajuela's coffee country.
  2. La Paz Waterfall Gardens — five cascading waterfalls and a wildlife refuge, a natural stop on the same road up toward Poás.
  3. Irazú Volcano National Park — Costa Rica's highest volcano, with a stark, almost lunar crater floor and a climb from Cartago through sweeping farmland views.
  4. Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, Cartago — the country's most important pilgrimage church, a good anchor for a Cartago loop.
  5. Orosi Valley Viewpoint (Mirador de Orosi) — a postcard overlook of coffee fields, river and colonial church, one of the most scenic short rides near the capital.
  6. Cerro de la Muerte — a high-altitude stretch of the Pan-American Highway through páramo and cloud forest, dramatic for its sheer elevation change.
  7. Mirador de Aserrí — a hilltop lookout south of the city, popular with locals for sunset views and typical Costa Rican food.
  8. Braulio Carrillo National Park (Zurquí sector) — misty rainforest along the San José–Guápiles highway, a fast contrast from city streets to primary forest.
  9. Volcán Barva — a quieter, forested volcano with a crater lagoon reached via Heredia's back roads, good for a longer highland ride.
  10. Parque La Sabana — San José's main urban park, a natural starting or meeting point before heading out of town.

What do you need to rent a quad bike in San José?

Street-legal quads are usually rented against a standard car driving licence — the legal category can vary by operator, so it's worth confirming when you book. The legal minimum driving age in Costa Rica is 18, though many rental companies set their own, higher minimum. An International Driving Permit isn't required. Expect a deposit, typically held on a credit card in the main driver's name.

How much does it cost to rent a quad bike in San José?

Prices are in CRC. A small 250cc quad realistically runs around 25,000–30,000 CRC per day in the green season, rising to roughly 35,000–55,000 CRC per day in the dry, high season. Larger 420cc-plus models or two-seat units carry a premium, often 60–100% above the base rate.

  • Rates climb from December through April as the dry season peaks, especially around Christmas–New Year and February holidays.
  • September and October, deep in the green season, are the cheapest and quietest months to book.

When to book a rental quad bike in San José?

High season runs December to April, when roads are driest and demand is highest — book ahead if you're travelling around Christmas or Easter week. Low season stretches May to November, with the heaviest rain in September and October; prices drop noticeably, though afternoon downpours are common and some unpaved routes and river crossings can become impassable after heavy rain. July often brings a short dry spell, a good shoulder-season window if you want lower prices without the full wet season.

Local traffic rules in San José

Costa Rica drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers, and motorcycles and quads must run with headlights on during the day. Speed limits sit around 40–60 km/h in built-up areas and up to 80 km/h on rural highways, with radar and fixed cameras common. Drink-driving enforcement is strict and effectively zero-tolerance, so plan your route with that in mind, and keep your licence, passport and rental paperwork on hand for routine police checks.
