Wide, empty avenues run right along the water here, and that's the first thing you notice once you're on two wheels. Punta Arenas sits on the Strait of Magellan, and riding the costanera at golden hour — the strait turning silver, the wind off Tierra del Fuego at your back — is reason enough to rent a scooter in Punta Arenas. From Plaza Muñoz Gamero you can be at the cypress rows of the Cementerio Municipal Sara Braun in minutes, or out past town toward Fuerte Bulnes before lunch.
The city center is compact and flat, with light traffic and generous streets that make a scooter an easy way to cover the plaza, the museums and the Zona Franca without waiting on buses. It also opens up the longer coastal run south, which is slow going on foot but a pleasant half-day ride by scooter. The one stretch worth flagging is the climb up to Cerro Mirador and the Reserva Forestal Magallanes — it's steep with gravel sections, better suited to a car or mountain bike than a rental scooter.
In Chile, any engine-powered scooter used on public roads requires a motorcycle licence — a car licence alone is not enough. Rental companies commonly ask for a minimum age in the low twenties, even though the legal minimum is 18. A deposit is usually held or pre-authorised on a credit card in your own name; be wary of any shop that asks to keep your passport instead. An International Driving Permit isn't strictly required, but it's worth carrying alongside your home licence just in case.
Average rental prices run from around 12,000–15,000 CLP per day in low season to 20,000–28,000 CLP per day in high season, with premium models reaching 25,000–35,000 CLP per day.
If you're after the best prices, aim for the low season between May and August, when demand drops off outside the ski areas. For comfortable riding weather, though, the window from November to March is the real sweet spot for the far south. Book ahead if you're travelling in December or January — cruise arrivals and summer tourism push both prices and demand up fast, and the best moped rentals in Punta Arenas get booked out early.
Chile drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for every rider and passenger on a scooter or motorcycle. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h near schools and on shared streets, and up to 100 km/h on rural roads outside town. Motorcycles and scooters must ride with headlights on at all times, day or night, and lane splitting isn't permitted. Alcohol limits are strict and tiered, so the safest rule on two wheels is simple: zero drinks before you ride.
