Poprad rarely gets top billing on its own, but that's exactly what makes it such a good base for two wheels. Rent a scooter in Poprad and you can be sipping coffee by the lakeside promenade at Štrbské Pleso within half an hour, or wandering the Gothic lanes of Spišská Sobota before most tour buses have even left their hotel car parks. The High Tatras rise up right behind the town, and a scooter is the easiest way to dip in and out of that mountain backdrop without committing to a full day's hike or a rental car you don't really need.
The town centre itself is small, flat and easy to navigate, so a scooter never feels like overkill there. Its real value shows once you head for the hills: distances to the Tatra resort villages and lake viewpoints are just long enough to wear out a bicycle, especially with the climbing involved, but too short to justify a car. Traffic on the secondary roads around Poprad stays light, and the surfaces are good, so even riders without much two-wheeler experience can explore comfortably. A scooter rental in Poprad essentially turns the whole Spiš region into a series of easy afternoon trips.
For a scooter up to 50cc, Slovak law sets the minimum age fairly low, but rental companies in Poprad set their own floor, typically 18. You'll need a valid driving licence covering mopeds, an ID or passport, and most operators will ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card. An International Driving Permit isn't required if your licence is from the EU or EEA; travellers from elsewhere are safer bringing one along anyway.
Expect to pay around 5–8 EUR per day in low season and 10–15 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 18–25 EUR per day.
July and August are the busiest and priciest months, driven by summer hiking traffic into the High Tatras, so it's worth booking a little ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season, with many mountain-area rentals cutting back hours or closing altogether as winter sets in. May, June and September sit in between: mild weather, thinner crowds, and generally friendlier prices — a good window if your dates are flexible.
Slovakia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for scooter riders and passengers, and dipped headlights must stay on at all times, day or night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road outside them. The blood-alcohol limit is a strict 0.0‰ — zero tolerance, no exceptions — so plan your evenings accordingly if you're riding the next morning.
