Poprad is one of those towns that hands you a bicycle and a view of the High Tatras in the same breath. Wheel out from the center and within minutes you're weaving through the Gothic square of Spišská Sobota, then picking up the paved greenway that runs straight toward the mountains. It's a rare setup: a compact, walkable town that opens directly onto one of Slovakia's best cycling corridors, so a short pedal turns into a proper day out toward the lakes and resorts below the peaks.
What makes Poprad genuinely made for two wheels is the Tatranská cyklomagistrála, the flat, well-surfaced greenway that threads along the foot of the High Tatras from town all the way to Kežmarok. There's no need to fight traffic or plan around a car — the route does the work for you, connecting resort towns, lake views and forest air in one continuous ride. Casual riders can turn around after an hour; anyone with more stamina can chase the path deep into the mountains and back.
Nothing complicated. Bicycle hire in Slovakia has no licence requirement and no minimum age, so anyone comfortable on two wheels can rent. Operators typically ask for ID or a passport and take a deposit, usually as a card hold, with the amount depending on the bike. An international driving permit is not needed for a bicycle rental.
A standard city or trekking bike runs EUR 3-5 per day in low season and EUR 7-10 per day in high season. E-bikes and higher-end mountain bikes sit at EUR 15-25 per day.
June through August is high season, when the greenway and resort towns fill up and prices climb. Booking a few days ahead is wise if you're arriving in midsummer. For lower prices and a calmer ride, aim for May, June or September, when the weather is still reliable but the crowds have thinned. From November to March, many rentals in the mountain and lake areas scale back or close entirely, so this isn't the season to count on.
Slovakia drives on the right, and cyclists follow the same rules of the road as drivers, including a strict 0.0‰ alcohol limit. Helmets aren't legally required for adult cyclists within town, but they're mandatory outside built-up areas and for anyone under 15 everywhere. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h outside them, though these mostly concern motor traffic rather than bikes. If you're riding the greenway after dark or in poor visibility, reflective gear and working lights are required by law.
