Mexico City rewards anyone willing to move through it at street level, and a scooter is the easiest way to do that. Wind along Paseo de la Reforma past the gilded Ángel de la Independencia, then peel off into the cobblestone lanes of Coyoacán where Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul draws visitors from every corner of the city. On a scooter you set the pace — stopping for a coffee in a plaza one moment, chasing the afternoon light over Chapultepec the next.

The capital's basin is famously flat, and its landmarks are scattered across districts that are too far apart to walk comfortably but too close together to justify a taxi stuck in the city's notorious traffic. A scooter closes that gap: you can cut between Centro, Reforma, Chapultepec and Polanco in the time it takes a car to clear a single roundabout, park right outside a museum, and join the crowds pedaling the car-free Reforma corridor every Sunday morning.

Top 10 things to see in Mexico City by scooter

  1. Bosque de Chapultepec — the city's largest park, with wide paved paths, a hilltop castle and a cluster of museums, all an easy ride from the traffic below.
  2. Paseo de la Reforma — the grand boulevard threading past monuments like the Ángel de la Independencia and Diana Cazadora, closed to cars on Sunday mornings.
  3. Centro Histórico / Zócalo — the cathedral, Palacio Nacional and colonial streets every visitor rides to at least once.
  4. Ángel de la Independencia — the gold-winged column on Reforma, a natural photo stop and a handy point for getting your bearings.
  5. Coyoacán (Museo Frida Kahlo / Casa Azul) — cobblestone plazas and markets built around Frida Kahlo's house-museum, south of the center.
  6. Xochimilco — canals and colorful trajineras from the Aztec-era chinampa system, a longer ride and a favorite weekend outing.
  7. Ciudad Universitaria (UNAM) — the UNESCO-listed campus, home to Diego Rivera's mosaic library and the murals of Estadio Olímpico.
  8. Basílica de Guadalupe — the country's most visited religious site, a straightforward ride north of downtown.
  9. Torre Latinoamericana — a historic skyscraper with an observation deck overlooking the Centro Histórico.
  10. Polanco and its museums (Soumaya & Jumex) — striking architecture and the city's upscale district, an easy loop off Reforma.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Mexico City?

You'll need a valid driver's licence — Mexican licences have their own motorcycle category, but foreign licences are accepted from tourists, and an International Driving Permit isn't required. Most shops set their own minimum age, commonly 18 or higher, so it's worth confirming before you book. Expect to leave a deposit; if a shop asks to hold your passport, you can usually offer a cash deposit or a card hold instead.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Mexico City?

Average rental prices run from around 95–120 MXN per day in low season to roughly 180–280 MXN per day in high season for a standard scooter, with larger or premium electric models reaching 350–500 MXN per day.

  • Prices climb around November–December, during Día de Muertos and the Christmas and New Year holidays, and again around Semana Santa.
  • Prices drop in the quieter months of June–September and in January–February.

When to book a rental scooter in Mexico City?

High season runs December through April, when dry, cooler weather draws the most visitors and prices sit at their highest. Low season falls between June and October, through the rainy months, when the city is quieter and rates are noticeably cheaper. If you're planning around Christmas, Semana Santa or spring break, book well ahead — those are the busiest and priciest weeks of the year.

Local traffic rules in Mexico City

Traffic in Mexico drives on the right. Helmets are required for both rider and passenger, so treat one as non-negotiable regardless of how short the trip. Speed limits are posted in km/h and vary by road type, generally 30–60 km/h in built-up areas and lower still near schools, so keep an eye on signage rather than assuming a single citywide limit. Drink-driving checkpoints are common in the city, and the legal blood-alcohol limit is stricter for motorcyclists than for car drivers. Watch out for topes — speed bumps that are often unmarked and easy to miss, especially at night.

If you wish to rent a scooter without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
