Mexico City rewards anyone willing to move through it at street level, and a scooter is the easiest way to do that. Wind along Paseo de la Reforma past the gilded Ángel de la Independencia, then peel off into the cobblestone lanes of Coyoacán where Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul draws visitors from every corner of the city. On a scooter you set the pace — stopping for a coffee in a plaza one moment, chasing the afternoon light over Chapultepec the next.
The capital's basin is famously flat, and its landmarks are scattered across districts that are too far apart to walk comfortably but too close together to justify a taxi stuck in the city's notorious traffic. A scooter closes that gap: you can cut between Centro, Reforma, Chapultepec and Polanco in the time it takes a car to clear a single roundabout, park right outside a museum, and join the crowds pedaling the car-free Reforma corridor every Sunday morning.
You'll need a valid driver's licence — Mexican licences have their own motorcycle category, but foreign licences are accepted from tourists, and an International Driving Permit isn't required. Most shops set their own minimum age, commonly 18 or higher, so it's worth confirming before you book. Expect to leave a deposit; if a shop asks to hold your passport, you can usually offer a cash deposit or a card hold instead.
Average rental prices run from around 95–120 MXN per day in low season to roughly 180–280 MXN per day in high season for a standard scooter, with larger or premium electric models reaching 350–500 MXN per day.
High season runs December through April, when dry, cooler weather draws the most visitors and prices sit at their highest. Low season falls between June and October, through the rainy months, when the city is quieter and rates are noticeably cheaper. If you're planning around Christmas, Semana Santa or spring break, book well ahead — those are the busiest and priciest weeks of the year.
Traffic in Mexico drives on the right. Helmets are required for both rider and passenger, so treat one as non-negotiable regardless of how short the trip. Speed limits are posted in km/h and vary by road type, generally 30–60 km/h in built-up areas and lower still near schools, so keep an eye on signage rather than assuming a single citywide limit. Drink-driving checkpoints are common in the city, and the legal blood-alcohol limit is stricter for motorcyclists than for car drivers. Watch out for topes — speed bumps that are often unmarked and easy to miss, especially at night.
