Mexico City doesn't reveal itself from a bus window or a taxi queue. It opens up when you cut your own line through it — weaving past Ángel de la Independencia on Paseo de la Reforma, ducking into the shaded avenues of Bosque de Chapultepec, then rolling on toward the mismatched rooftops of Coyoacán. On a motorcycle, the distances that make this city intimidating on foot — and maddening in a rental car — shrink into a single unhurried afternoon.
This is a city built for two wheels, whether you like it or not. Traffic crawls through one-way grids for hours at a time, parking downtown is scarce and overpriced, and the metro, while efficient, won't get you to Xochimilco's canals or the pyramids at Teotihuacán. A motorcycle slips through where cars stall, parks for the price of a coffee, and turns a day trip into an actual day trip. The altitude keeps the air cool even in the dry months, and outside the summer rains, riding here is close to ideal — comfortable, direct, and genuinely enjoyable rather than just a way to get from A to B.
You'll need a valid driver's licence — a foreign licence is accepted for tourists, and an International Driving Permit isn't required. Minimum age is generally 18, though many rental companies set their own higher limit, so it's worth confirming with the shop. A deposit or credit-card hold is standard practice; if you'd rather not leave your passport, most places will accept a cash deposit or card hold instead.
Prices move with the season. In low season, expect around 480–650 MXN per day; in high season that climbs to roughly 750–1100 MXN, and premium or larger-displacement models can run 1200–2000+ MXN per day.
High season runs December through April, when dry weather and holiday travel both drive prices up — book a few weeks ahead if you're arriving over Christmas or Semana Santa. Low season falls between June and October, coinciding with the rainy season; afternoon downpours are common, so plan rides for the morning and you'll still find some of the year's best prices. November through April is generally the most comfortable stretch for riding, dry and cool at this altitude.
Mexico drives on the right. Helmets are required for both rider and passenger, and it's worth treating that as non-negotiable even where enforcement varies. Speed limits run roughly 30–60 km/h in built-up areas and 20 km/h near schools, so keep an eye out for topes — speed bumps that appear with little or no warning, even on open roads through villages. Checkpoints for drink-driving are common in the city, and the legal limit is stricter for motorcyclists than for car drivers. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Mexico City, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
