Cozumel unfolds best when you're the one steering. Rent a motorcycle in Cozumel and the island's single coastal loop opens up in a way no tour bus or taxi can match — you decide how long to linger at the reef in front of Chankanaab National Park, or whether to keep riding until the pavement thins out toward Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, where a lighthouse and a lagoon full of crocodiles wait at the very southern tip. The wind, the salt air, the sudden turquoise views along the way — that's the part a rental car windshield always dulls down.
What makes this vehicle work so well here is the island itself. Cozumel is small, flat, and almost entirely wrapped by one paved road, so there's no getting lost and no need for a car to see everything in a single day. San Miguel's streets carry light, slow traffic and parking a scooter takes seconds, while the open east-coast highway rewards two wheels with unobstructed ocean views and enough breeze to make the ride itself the destination, not just the means to one.
Mexico requires a valid licence with a motorcycle category, though a foreign licence is accepted for visiting riders and an International Driving Permit isn't required. Rental companies generally expect riders to be at least 18, though many shops set their own, higher minimum, so it's worth confirming with the operator directly. Expect to leave a deposit or a card hold — some shops ask to keep your passport, but you can usually offer cash or a card hold instead.
A standard scooter or light motorcycle runs around 450–500 MXN per day in low season, climbing to roughly 700–900 MXN per day in high season. Larger-displacement motorcycles or newer models typically cost 30–60% more than a basic 125–150cc scooter.
High season runs December through April, with the Christmas holidays and spring break as the busiest, priciest weeks — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season falls between June and October, when the island is quieter and prices ease off, though this overlaps with the rainy season, so mornings tend to be the driest time to ride. November through April is generally the most comfortable stretch for exploring on two wheels.
Mexico drives on the right, and helmets are required for both rider and passenger — treat this as non-negotiable island-wide. Speed limits run roughly 30–60 km/h in town, dropping to 20 km/h near schools, so keep an eye out for topes (speed bumps), which are common and often unmarked. Alcohol checkpoints operate in populated areas, and the legal limit for riders is generally stricter than for car drivers, so it's simplest to avoid drinking before you ride at all.
