Canberra doesn't feel like a capital city at first glance — it feels like a park with a government inside it. That's exactly what makes it so good on two wheels. Glide along the Lake Burley Griffin foreshore path, past the Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet and the National Carillon, then climb up to Mount Ainslie Lookout for a view straight down the city axis to Parliament House and the War Memorial. Few cities let you cover that much ground, and that much story, in a single afternoon.
Canberra was designed around a lake, not a street grid, so distances between the places worth seeing are just long enough to be tedious on foot and just short enough to make a car feel like overkill. Add wide bike lanes, gentle hills and a city built for sweeping roundabouts rather than stop-start traffic, and you've got near-ideal conditions to rent a scooter in Canberra and string the whole Parliamentary Triangle together in one loop, parking wherever you like.
Australia doesn't let a car licence cover scooters the way many countries do — you'll need a motorcycle licence or learner permit, valid for any engine size including 50cc. If you're on a learner or provisional permit, you're limited to LAMS-approved machines. An International Driving Permit isn't required, but most rental operators ask for a deposit, usually held as a credit-card pre-authorisation in your own name, with the amount varying by vehicle. Riders are generally expected to be at least 18.
Prices start from around AUD 8-10 per day in low season and run AUD 18-25 per day in high season, with premium models reaching AUD 30-40 per day. A few things move the price:
September to November and December to January are Canberra's busiest and priciest months, driven by Floriade and the summer school holidays — book ahead if you're travelling then. For better value and a quieter city, June to August is the low season, with the trade-off being colder riding weather. Either way, booking a few days in advance keeps your pick of models.
Australia drives on the left, and Canberra's roundabout-heavy layout takes a little getting used to if you're not familiar with it. Helmets are compulsory by law for every rider, no exceptions, and must meet the Australian/New Zealand safety standard. Speed limits default to 50 km/h in built-up areas and drop to 40 km/h in school zones during posted hours, with cameras enforcing both closely. The blood alcohol limit is 0.05 for full licence holders and zero for learner and provisional riders, and random breath testing is common, so it's best to keep riding and drinking well separated.
