Bogotá rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and a scooter is the easiest way to do it. One morning you can be winding up toward Monserrate for a view over the whole savannah, and by afternoon you're weaving through the cobbled lanes of La Candelaria, past street art and colonial balconies. Sunday mornings bring the Ciclovía, when the city shuts more than 100km of main avenues to cars — ride the Séptima corridor free of traffic and feel the city move at its own pace for a few hours.

Bogotá stretches long and narrow along a north-south axis, and its real attractions — La Candelaria, Chapinero, Zona T, Usaquén — sit 10km or more apart, connected by roads that get jammed fast. A scooter beats a taxi stuck in that traffic and costs far less than stacking up ride-hailing trips all day. Sitting at 2,600 metres, the city also stays cool year-round, so you can ride for hours without the heat fatigue that wears riders down elsewhere.

Top 10 things to see in Bogotá by scooter

  1. Cerro de Monserrate — the hilltop church that gives Bogotá its postcard view; ride the winding road up, or park at the base and take the cable car or funicular the rest of the way.
  2. La Candelaria — the colonial old town, with cobbled streets, murals, Plaza de Bolívar and a cluster of museums, best covered at scooter speed.
  3. Ciclovía on Carrera 7 — the Sunday and holiday tradition of closing major avenues to cars, a signature ride for any visitor.
  4. Parque Simón Bolívar — the city's largest green space, with wide paved paths ideal for an easy loop away from traffic.
  5. Jardín Botánico José Celestino Mutis — Andean and páramo plant collections right next to the park, an easy add-on stop.
  6. Usaquén — a leafy, colonial-feel neighborhood in the north, known for its Sunday flea market and relaxed cafés.
  7. Zona T / Zona Rosa — pedestrian streets packed with restaurants and nightlife, a natural spot to end an evening ride.
  8. Museo del Oro — the world-famous gold museum, a short hop from La Candelaria.
  9. Quinta de Bolívar — Simón Bolívar's restored house-museum at the foot of Monserrate, with gardens and a mountain backdrop.
  10. Chapinero — the creative, LGBTQ-friendly district full of bars, design shops and murals, a good link between downtown and the north.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Bogotá?

Most rental scooters in the city are 100–125cc, which counts as a motorcycle under Colombian law — you'll need a motorcycle licence (category A1), since a plain car licence usually isn't accepted. The legal minimum age is 18, though many rental companies set their own, often higher, cut-off depending on the machine. Expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or as a hold on your credit card, plus your passport or ID. An International Driving Permit isn't strictly required, but it's worth carrying one alongside your home licence just in case.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Bogotá?

Prices run roughly 22,000–28,000 COP per day in low season and 35,000–50,000 COP per day in high season, with premium or newer models reaching 55,000–80,000 COP per day.

  • Prices peak around December–January, during the holiday season, and again in July.
  • Prices dip in the shoulder months of February–April and September–November.

When to book a rental scooter in Bogotá?

High season runs December–January and again in July, when demand and prices both climb, so it's worth booking ahead. Low season falls in February–April and September–November, when you'll find better rates and more availability without booking far in advance.

Local traffic rules in Bogotá

Colombia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and motorcycles must run with their headlights on at all times, day or night. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h on most city streets, dropping to 30 km/h near schools and residential zones. Alcohol tolerance is effectively zero — sanctions start at around 0.02% BAC — so plan to ride sober. Keep your licence and the vehicle's SOAT insurance documents on hand, since police checkpoints are routine.
