Cobbled lanes and marble squares keep most of Split's old town off-limits to anything with an engine — which is exactly why a quad is the right tool the moment you step outside it. Roll off the waterfront, past the Riva promenade, and within minutes you're climbing through the pines of Marjan Hill with the islands laid out below you, or bouncing along the ridge toward Klis Fortress, the medieval stronghold that watches over the whole bay. You could just as easily point the handlebars south to Kašjuni Beach for a swim, or north along the coast toward Trogir, and be back in town by dinner.

Split's geography is really two cities stacked on top of each other: a tight, pedestrian old town squeezed inside Diocletian's Palace, and a much bigger sprawl of hills, coastline and countryside around it. A car struggles on the narrow lanes leading up into Marjan or Mosor, and a walking tour won't get you past the city limits. A quad splits the difference — nimble enough for winding backroads, sturdy enough for the gravel tracks above Žrnovnica, and quick enough to turn Split into a base for real day trips rather than just a place to sightsee.

Top 10 things to see in Split by quad bike

  1. Diocletian's Palace — the UNESCO-listed Roman core of the old town; park nearby and finish the visit on foot.
  2. Marjan Hill (Marjan Forest Park) — a wooded hill above the city with sweeping viewpoints over Split and the islands.
  3. Bačvice Beach — the city's signature beach, an easy ride from the centre when you need a swim break.
  4. Kašjuni Beach — a quieter pebble beach on the Marjan peninsula, a popular short detour.
  5. Klis Fortress — a hilltop medieval fortress just outside town with some of the best views in the region.
  6. Riva Waterfront — the palm-lined seafront promenade, a natural place to start or end your route.
  7. Kaštela Bay coastal road — a scenic stretch linking Split to the seven towns of Kaštela.
  8. Trogir — another UNESCO old town, about 25 km from Split and a favourite longer excursion.
  9. Mount Kozjak — hills behind the city with gravel tracks and panoramic views for the more adventurous.
  10. Žrnovnica — a village at the foot of Mosor mountain and the gateway to the countryside beyond.

What do you need to rent a quad bike in Split?

The licence you'll need depends on how the machine is registered — lighter, road-registered quads generally fall under a moped-type category, while heavier ones are usually ridden on an ordinary car licence. The rental company will confirm exactly which category their fleet requires, so bring your licence with you. In practice, 18 is the usual minimum age. A deposit is standard, taken as a card hold or in cash and released when the quad comes back undamaged, with the amount depending on the vehicle's value. If your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA, carry an International Driving Permit as well.

How much does it cost to rent a quad bike in Split?

Prices swing a lot with the season. Expect around EUR 15–25 per day between November and March, rising to EUR 35–60 per day from June through September. Larger, newer four-seat or higher-cc quads can run EUR 60–90 per day at the height of summer.

  • Cheapest: November to February
  • Dearest: July and August
  • Shoulder months sit comfortably in between

When to book a rental quad bike in Split?

High season runs June to August, with July and August the busiest and priciest weeks on the whole Adriatic coast — book ahead if you're travelling then, since stock does run low. Low season stretches from November to March, when prices drop and the city is far quieter. If you'd rather skip both extremes, May, June and September offer warm, dry weather without the peak crowds or heat.

Local traffic rules in Split

Croatia drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any moped, scooter or motorcycle, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% for most drivers, but zero tolerance applies if you're under 25. Motorcycles and mopeds must ride with headlights on at all times, day and night, and mobile phones can only be used hands-free while riding.
