Picture trading San José's honking buses and one-way tangles for open switchbacks, coffee terraces and a volcano crater smoking on the horizon. That's the real draw of the Central Valley: not the capital itself, but everything ringing it. Rent a quad bike in San José and within an hour and a half you can be climbing toward the crater at Poás Volcano National Park or tracing the Orosi Valley loop past coffee plantations and the Cachí reservoir, stopping wherever the view demands it.
San José's own streets are tight, congested and not built for sightseeing on two or four wheels — this is a city best explored by leaving it. The surrounding highlands are the real playground: paved volcano-access roads give way to rougher gravel stretches near Orosi and Turrialba, river-cut farm tracks, and steep mountain grades that a rental car would tiptoe around. A quad bike handles that shift in terrain without blinking, which is exactly why a **quad bike rental in San José** makes more sense here than a scooter or bicycle would.
Rules for street-legal quads aren't fully standardised in Costa Rica, but most operators treat a regular car driving licence as sufficient — an International Driving Permit is not required. The legal minimum driving age is 18, though many rental companies set their own, higher minimum. Expect a deposit held against a credit card in the main driver's name; ask your rental company to confirm the exact licence class and deposit amount before you book.
Average rental prices run around 8,000–10,000 CRC per day in low season and 13,000–17,000 CRC per day in high season, with larger or newer machines, or multi-passenger quads, closer to 18,000–22,000 CRC per day.
December to April is Costa Rica's dry season and high season for tourism, so book ahead if you're travelling then — roads are at their best and demand pushes prices up. May to November is the green season: quieter, cheaper, with rain that tends to fall in afternoon bursts rather than all day. July often brings a short dry spell locals call the "veranillo," a good shoulder-season window if you want lower prices without the heaviest rain.
Costa Rica drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders, speed limits generally run 40–60 km/h in built-up areas and up to 80 km/h on rural highways, and radar enforcement is common. Drink-driving is treated as zero-tolerance, with strict enforcement and heavy fines. Keep your licence, passport (or a copy with your entry stamp) and rental paperwork on hand, since police checkpoints are routine — and remember that many routes toward volcanoes and waterfalls are unpaved with river crossings that can become impassable after heavy rain.
