San José doesn't feel like a city built for sitting in traffic, and once you're past the first roundabout you'll understand why so many riders here never bother with a car. Handlebars in hand, you can slip between the buses on the Central Avenue gridlock, then twenty minutes later be leaning into the curves toward Volcán Poás, watching the Central Valley drop away below you. Head the other direction and the road to Volcán Irazú climbs through Cartago's coffee farms until the air turns cool and thin. This is a city where the best sights aren't downtown — they're an hour up a mountain road, and a motorcycle is simply the fastest, most enjoyable way to get to them.
The Central Valley sits ringed by volcanoes, and every one of them is connected to the capital by narrow, switchbacking roads that reward two wheels far more than four. Costa Rican traffic in San José itself is dense and slow, so lane-splitting between cars is common practice and a motorcycle simply moves better through it. Once you're clear of the city, the terrain does the rest: steep climbs, tight hairpins and sudden changes in elevation are exactly what a nimble bike is built for, letting you reach highland attractions in a single day that would eat up hours in a rental car stuck behind trucks.
You'll need a valid motorcycle-class licence — a standard car licence generally isn't accepted for anything beyond the smallest machines, and the exact cc cut-off depends on the class of your licence. An International Driving Permit isn't legally required, though it's worth carrying alongside your original licence. The legal minimum age to drive in Costa Rica is 18, though many rental companies set their own, higher minimum. A deposit is standard practice too, usually held on a credit card in the main rider's name.
Average rental prices run around 13,000 CRC per day in low season, rising to roughly 18,000–20,000 CRC per day in high season. Larger-displacement or adventure bikes, better suited to routes like Cerro de la Muerte or Braulio Carrillo, typically cost more.
December to April is high season — dry, sunny, and the busiest stretch for tourism, so it's worth booking a few weeks ahead if you're travelling over Christmas or Easter. May to November is the green season: quieter roads, lower prices, and rain that's usually confined to the afternoons rather than lasting all day. July often brings a short dry spell locals call the "veranillo," a good shoulder-season window if you want dry riding without high-season prices.
Costa Rica drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger, and motorcycles are required to ride with headlights on even in daylight. Speed limits generally run 40–60 km/h in built-up areas and up to 80 km/h on rural highways, with radar and fixed cameras common along the way. Drink-driving enforcement is strict and the tolerance is low, so treat it as zero. Keep your licence, passport and rental paperwork on hand — police checkpoints (retenes) are routine, especially on the mountain routes.
