Havana rewards anyone willing to cover ground. A quad bike puts you in charge of that ground: you set the pace along the Malecón as the light turns gold over the Caribbean, then peel off into Habana Vieja's colonial squares or push further out toward the fortresses guarding the bay. It's the difference between watching the city go by from a taxi window and actually feeling the sea air and the heat off the pavement.
The reason a quad works so well here comes down to geography. Havana's best sights aren't clustered — they run in an arc from the old town through Vedado and out to Miramar, a stretch that's slow on foot and unreliable by taxi once you're away from the main hotels. A quad gives you the freedom to stop wherever the view demands it, and it opens up the coast road east toward the beaches, a trip that's awkward without your own wheels. The terrain helps too: wide boulevards and flat coastal roads suit a quad naturally, though once you're inside Habana Vieja's narrow cobbled lanes, you'll want to park up and walk.
Quad bikes in Cuba are usually offered as guided excursions rather than free rentals, so operators will normally ask to see a valid driving licence and expect an adult driver — an International Driving Permit isn't formally required, though it's a sensible extra to carry alongside your national licence. Minimum age tends to sit in the low twenties, and a deposit is standard, taken in cash or blocked on a card, but confirm both the age limit and deposit amount with your specific operator before booking, since these details vary.
Expect to pay around 5,000–6,000 CUP per day in low season, rising to roughly 7,000–9,000 CUP per day in high season, with larger or newer models running 10,000–13,000 CUP per day. Cuba's exchange rates move quickly, so treat these as rough guides rather than fixed prices.
High season runs December through March, with a second bump in July and August, so book ahead if you're travelling then. May–June and September through November are the shoulder months, quieter and cheaper, though September and October fall inside hurricane season, when rain and road closures are more likely even as prices drop.
Cuba drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for scooter and motorcycle riders, with enforcement taken seriously in the cities. Posted speed limits sit around 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on rural paved roads, though in practice traffic shares the road with bicycles, horse carts and pedestrians, so real speeds stay well below that. Treat drink-driving as a strict zero — Cuban penalties for causing an accident while intoxicated are severe, and it isn't worth the risk on unfamiliar roads.
