Gozo rewards anyone willing to leave the main road, and a quad bike is the easiest way to do it. Bump down a dirt track toward Wied il-Għasri, where the cliffs open onto a pebble cove barely anyone finds by accident, or climb up to the Citadel in Victoria and watch the whole island spread out below you. Rent a quad bike in Gozo and the coastline, the salt pans, the red sand of Ramla Bay — all of it becomes reachable in an afternoon, on your own schedule.
Gozo is barely 14km across, but it packs in narrow rural lanes, steep coastal tracks and dirt paths that a car simply can't manage and a scooter isn't built for. Distances between villages are short, so you're never far from the next viewpoint or cove, and the terrain rewards something with real ground clearance and grip. A quad bike rental in Gozo lets you cover the island at your own pace without worrying about parking in Victoria's tight streets or missing the turn-off to somewhere quieter.
For a road-registered quad, a standard car (category B) licence is normally accepted, so most travellers won't need anything extra. An International Driving Permit isn't required. Operators typically ask for a minimum age of 18, sometimes 21 for larger or two-seater models, plus a minimum period of holding your licence. A deposit is usually blocked on a credit card in your name; the exact amount varies by operator and by the quad you choose, so it's worth checking at the time of booking.
Expect to pay around 15-25 EUR per day in low season, rising to 35-50 EUR per day in high season. Larger-engine or two-seater quads run higher, around 50-70 EUR per day at peak times.
High season runs June to September, peaking in July and August, when Gozo's roads and popular coves get busiest and it pays to book your quad bike hire in Gozo well ahead. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest prices and the quietest tracks, though winter can bring short bursts of heavy rain and strong coastal wind. April, May and late September into October hit the sweet spot: warm, dry, and easy to book with only a few days' notice.
Malta drives on the left, and at Gozo's many roundabouts you give way to traffic coming from your right. Helmets aren't legally required for quad passengers the way they are for scooter riders, but operators commonly provide them and it's sensible to wear one regardless. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h outside them — Gozo has no motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05 g/100 ml, so leave the drinking for after you've parked. Road-registered quads must stay on public roads unless your operator specifically authorises an off-road route, and remember that no vehicles at all are allowed on nearby Comino.
