Traffic in The Hague thins out fast once you get outside the historic core, and that's exactly where a motorcycle earns its keep. One minute you're cutting past the Binnenhof, the next you're leaning into the dune road toward Scheveningen with the sea air hitting your visor. If you want to rent a motorcycle in The Hague, our website puts that freedom within reach in a few clicks — no waiting on trams, no hunting for a bike rack outside Madurodam.

The city centre is flat and compact enough to walk, but the best of The Hague sits a few kilometres out along the coast, and that's where a motorcycle beats every other option. It's faster than a bicycle on the open dune stretches, easier to park than a car near the beach, and light Dutch traffic combined with well-surfaced roads makes riding into and out of town genuinely relaxed almost year-round.

Top 10 things to see in The Hague by motorcycle

  1. Scheveningen Beach & Pier — the classic ride: boardwalk, pier, and sea air minutes from the city centre.
  2. Kurhaus Hotel, Scheveningen — an iconic beachfront landmark and a great photo stop at the end of the strip.
  3. Madurodam — the miniature-Netherlands park, a fun short detour popular with visitors.
  4. Binnenhof & Hofvijver — the historic parliamentary complex and its pond, a must-see in the city centre.
  5. Peace Palace (Vredespaleis) — a grand early-1900s building housing the ICJ, striking enough to warrant a slow pass.
  6. Panorama Mesdag — a unique 19th-century cylindrical panorama painting near the centre, an easy detour on two wheels.
  7. Clingendael Park — a wooded estate with a famous Japanese garden, good for a quieter break off the throttle.
  8. Kijkduin Beach — a quieter alternative to Scheveningen, and a nice way to extend a coastal loop.
  9. Westbroekpark — a rose garden near Scheveningen, a pleasant stop along the coastal route.
  10. Scheveningen–Kijkduin dune road — the scenic stretch linking the two beaches, made for a longer ride.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in The Hague?

Licence requirements depend on the machine. Smaller scooters (up to 45 km/h) need category AM, usually included with a car or motorcycle licence, from age 16. For a proper motorcycle you'll need category A1, A2 or A depending on engine power — A1 from 18, A2 from 20, and full A access from 24 (or earlier through progressive access). An International Driving Permit isn't legally required in the Netherlands, though it's worth carrying if your home licence isn't in Latin script. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a card pre-authorisation, and to show your passport at pickup.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in The Hague?

Average rental prices run EUR 20–25 per day in low season and EUR 35–45 per day in high season, with premium models from EUR 50–70 per day.

  • Cheapest months: November to February.
  • Priciest months: June to August, when demand along the coast peaks.

When to book a rental motorcycle in The Hague?

High season runs April to September, peaking in July and August, so book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season, November through February, brings quieter roads, shorter days and the lowest prices — a fine trade if you don't mind a coat under your jacket. May, June and September sit comfortably in between: good weather, fewer crowds, easier bookings.

Local traffic rules in The Hague

The Netherlands drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for motorcycles, mopeds and even the 25 km/h snorfiets. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas (many streets are 30 km/h zones), 80 km/h outside town, and up to 100 km/h on motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l for novice licence holders, and it applies to cyclists too. Keep your headlight on at all times — it's mandatory for motorcycles and mopeds, day and night — and give way to traffic from the right at unmarked junctions.
