Picture cruising the boardwalk at Scheveningen Beach as the sun drops behind the pier, then swinging inland to catch the last light on the Kurhaus facade before it fades. That's an afternoon in The Hague when you rent a scooter in The Hague instead of waiting on trams. One ride can take you from the grand lawns of the Vredespaleis to the political heart of the country at the Binnenhof, with nothing in between but open road and your own pace.
The Hague is about as easy as it gets for two wheels — flat streets, wide cycle lanes, and short distances between the coast and the city centre. A scooter closes the gap between Scheveningen's beaches and the museums downtown in minutes, and it opens up the quieter southern coastline toward Kijkduin, along with inland green spaces like Clingendael, all without hunting for parking or timing a tram.
Dutch rules put both the 25 km/h snorfiets and the 45 km/h bromfiets under licence category AM, which is already included in a standard car or motorcycle licence, and the minimum age is 16. An International Driving Permit isn't required. You'll need to leave a deposit — usually a card pre-authorisation — and bring your passport or ID when you pick up the vehicle.
Average rental prices range from EUR 5–15 per day in low season up to EUR 25–45 per day in high season, and premium models typically run 50–100% above the standard rate.
High season runs from April to September, with July and August the busiest and priciest months, so if you want the best rate it pays to book a little ahead. Low season stretches from November to February — wetter, windier, with shorter days, but that's exactly when you'll find the lowest prices if you don't mind a coat.
The Netherlands drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both bromfiets and snorfiets riders, and headlights must stay on at all times, day and night. Built-up areas are capped at 50 km/h, with plenty of 30 km/h zones around the centre, while snorfietsen are limited to 25 km/h and bromfietsen to 45 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and stricter for novice licence holders, so plan your rides with that in mind. Where a cycle path exists, use it — and if you want to rent a scooter in The Hague, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
